    Bloodhound got loose

    Hi,
One of my friends bloodhounds got loose last night and still has not come home. Found this forum and thought I would get your feelings about it. At the moment she does not know exactly how she got loose, every thing is secure. There are a couple possibilities. Her first thought is a drainage pipe, that is around 16 inches diameter, but I dont think she could fit, and if she did she could not go very far, but she thinks she could have fit through it. She knows her dog better than I do. The second is a bit of a hole under the fence, again I am not so sure she could have fit under it. I could be wrong, I have never owned a dog.

The thing that has her really tore up right now is that it was very cold, 10-15 degrees last night, and it is around 30 at the moment. While I am not an owner or do I ever intend to own a dog, I dont like seeing animals hurt, I am a fish person. And with the temps last night, I am afraid I am assuming the worse, not knowing how resourceful or how they handle cold weather this breed is.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how we might proceed on possibly tracking her down some way? I have toyed with the thought of putting her male one on the leash and see if he can track her down, but he is not the brightest one in comparison to the female. I think he would just enjoy going for a walk.

Anyways, thought I would just post here and see if I could come up with some ideas. Oh, these are full grown adults, the male is quite abit bigger than the female if that helps any. TIA

You might consider using another dog to find this one...esp if she has another Bloodhound trained at all in searching. Just wave something that smells like the other dog in front of it and you never know!

Very sorry to hear of your friends loss and I hope the hound comes home soon!

    Thanks,

Like I said, she does have another bloodhound(the brother), but they are not trained in tracking.

So, I have a bloodhound mix weighing 95 lbs. He can squeeze himself under a chainlink fence unless it is actually cemented into the ground. No hole in the fence or anything, he just squeezes under the bottom. It is most certainly possible.

It is very cold, but bloodhounds do have thick coats. When I take my dog to the park even on the very coldest of days, he thinks nothing of laying down in the snow and chewing on a stick.

The problem with bloodhounds when they get loose is they are absolute idiots when it comes to their noses. They get so involved in tracking that the next thing they know they are far from home, or maybe even standing in the middle of the street.

I say to take out the male, definately. Say the female's name a few times and see if he can pick up a track. That's what these dogs were born to do and we've had several members here tell stories of one of their dogs going missing and the other dog being able to find them. Doubly so for a scent-tracking breed.

I hope everything turns out okay. I love bloodhounds to pieces and I hate it when I hear sad things about them. Have your friend call all local shelters and pounds within a very wide radius. A couple counties in either direction. Bloodhounds can cover a lot of ground, and in addition, someone may have found him or picked him up and taken him to a shelter near their house not near your friend's house. My coonhound was brought to a shelter in a whole other county when he was found as a stray because the shelter in the county he was found in was full and couldn't accept him.

Another GREAT way to get a dog back...go out to an area near where you think they escaped, or in the direction they took...place a crate large enough to shelter them...inside the crate place a truly SMELLY FUNKY t shirt soaked with the owner's scent and other scents from home. Place food and water daily there and generally if in the area at all....the dog will return to the spot.

Where is this dog?  Post plenty of pictures around the vicinity.

Ok, This kinda worries me then, if in fact she was able to get into the drainage pipe, this causes a problem. The pipe leads into the storm sewers. I just hope she hasnt got in there and got stuck. But there is really no way of knowing. I told her I would go crawling through it, but after I saw it, there is no way I would fit.

Good to hear, just hope being out all night is not too much.

I think we will try this. But I have a little more faith in the female that got loose than the male. It will be 24 hours around 8 est tonight.

We dont know how, where, or what direction she took off. But I did have her get some of her clothing that she had been wearing and lay it in front of the pipe.

also call local vets. If she got hit by a car or injured somehow she might be at a vet clinic.
Did she have collar/tags on? Is she chipped (microchip)?
My DIL recently found a basset hound who had been missing for about 5 days - he was 4 towns and many miles away from home. He was found as a result of her calling every shelter within a 50-mile radius of where she found him!!! His owners called her 2 days after she located him and he'd been missing for 4 days at that point.

It turned out all ok, she came home at 5 o'clock this morning, safe and sound but hungry. She even got back into the backyard again, over or under the fence, who knows. The hound is grounded for an indefinite period of time. [:)]

Thanks for all of your input.
