2 year old dog, peeing on floor all the time.

Our 2 year old pomeranian is housetrained. We adopted him from the animal shelter last year. Lately, we've been having problems with him peeing on the floor, sometimes just a short time after going out and peeing outside. He knows it's wrong because if you show it too him he 'acts guilty' and shy. He won't do it in the room with you normally, he'll wait until the door is open and sneak out there and pee. He's watched like a hawk 95% of the time, it's just rare occasions he gets away from us. He's crated while we are away and sometimes he won't even hold it on the short walk from the crate to the door to go outside. He also seems to pee when he gets too excited. He's even peed on our bed and pillows before. He goes out normally every 4 hours or so while we're home and first thing when we get home from work or wake up in the morning. It's not like a huge puddle either, it's not uncommon to enter the living room and see two small puddles. His urine appears normal in color and odor and his last vet visit showed him to be very healthy. What is up with this dog?

Most of the time he's fine for a few hours after peeing outside, but it seems like he is lacking the willpower to hold it sometimes. When the first urge hits him to go, he'll just go wherever he is and not attempt to hold it.

You should have a urine anaylsis done... He could have a bladder infection. That would be the first place I would start... rule out that then you might have to consider a belly band to retrain him. But PLEASE get the urine checked first !!

Hi! I would recommend a call at least or preferably a visit to the vet.... he might have a UTI or some other infection causing him to not be able to hold it much. Does he drink a lot more water lately? That would indicate a urinary tract infection to me - a dog who knows it hurts when he pees so he drinks a lot but then has to go more.

Oh, and he doesn't "know" it's wrong - that "guilty" acting really is only that he knows you will get mad and he is trying to appease you before you do. BUT doesn't mean that he associated the fact that he peed on the floor with the anger you express, only that you are angry. Which means he will pee where you can't see him since then there's a chance you won't be angry. Anyway.

That's my opinion. I'm not sure what else it could be. Any other drastic changes in his life that might cause him to lack in the houstraining bit or otherwise make him nervous or afraid?

I agree he is just trying to appease you - please don't get mad at him because you assume "he knows he did wrong" - this weill confuse and upset him needlessly and won't help with the problem. If you find any mess, put him away somewhere quietly while you clean up using a biological cleaner. It won't do any good "showing it to him" - if he does make the connection he is just likely to get neurotic about toileting which will make the problem far worse.

As well as a vet check, go back to basics with house training - lots of supervision, confinement when you can't watch him and yummy treats and "parties" when he does it outside. If the vet rules out a UTI, then I would lay money on him being back on track before long.

Don't wait for him to "tell" you he needs to go out - keep him on a schedule. He is less likely to have accidents that way.

Yes, I agree, vet check up is needed, my April did that and she had a bladder infection, has happened twice to her, and her urine did not look any different either.
