Wire Crate Cover

    Wire Crate Cover

Anyone use a cover on their wire crate?  I see that they are available...made out of a soft material, like velour or velvet...not too expensive either.

Word of caution: for many dogs, pulling a piece of fabric through the wire of a crate and then shredding it is tremendous fun. Try some towels first and see if you have one of those types of dogs before ordering a nice crate cover.

Yep, I use old blankets.....if one gets chewed up I haven't lost 40 bucks, that's how much they are for the crates I have.

Colton LOVES to pull stuff in his crate.  I have to make sure there is plenty of clearance on all sides if he is in the wire crate.  I took him to work last week and put him in the grooming salon.  Since he was being loud, I covered the front with towels, not even thinking about it.  Well, after my training class, I went in and there was part of a towel in with him...so, no covers for him!

Thanks!  That's what I've got on there right now...she doesn't seem to be interested in it.  Now, her bedding that's another story.  The cover looks like it might hang in such a way that it would not be a temptation...no stringy or dangly things hanging...but honestly this is why I'm asking.  She could easily just grab it, if she really wanted it, even if there aren't any danglys.

Thanks you guys!  ...I knew I needed to ask this question!! [:)]

I have a blanket covering Grady's crate & he loves it.  He's not a destructive dog so I've had the same blanket on the crate since I've had him.  Don't worry, I've washed them occassionally.  He loves the cave feeling.  If he's in a crate & it's not covered he gets very antsy.

I sewed a cover for Zoe's crate and actually just bought fabric to make a new one this week!

I use sheets (we need a king size for good coverage [:)] ) if its real cold like currently I put a blanket over the sheet.
Bugsy is a mean chewer and has destroyed his fare share of beds & blankets but never the one over his crate - go figure!

I too used a towel initally with Dasher as he was a shredder. [:)] After he became a bit more mature I got the cover with the side bumpers.  He loves that!! Snuggles right in!! [:D]

I have covers over all of my dogs crates.  I haven't had any chewed, but I will admit that I am lucky.  Instead of buying the crate covers, I sewed them.  They turned out very well & were much cheaper than having to order them.

The cover I saw was at one of the larger pet retail chains for $36 or $38...something like that for a large crate (42").  I'm thinking, though, after reading all of your experiences that I might just stick with towels and sheets...maybe make my own eventually.

I like the cover because Myrika likes the enclosed crate better...but we like the size and airflow of the wire crate...we've got both.  As gradyupmybutt has already mentioned, the cover (or material like it) provides the den/cave-like atmosphere that she likes.  She sort of has the sensation as the crate is sided by two walls.  Also, I think the cover is more aesthetically pleasing to the human eye...and rounds out the sharp edges of the square crate.
