heard of a new "breed" today

    Boxadors

It's almost amazing how stupid people can be.  I saw a picture of a "Sharpett" the other day.  It's a Bassett with a Shar-pei.  Add skin conditions, double the ear infections, bow the legs out, and balance the rolled-in eyelids with ones that roll out.  Sounds like a great idea to me.  I have nothing against either breed, it's just that the dogs they're using for these breedings are most likely some of the worst quality dogs.  These are two breeds that are not known for perfect health.

Oh no.  Was this a deliberate cross?  Any info on why it was done - what was the specific aim in mind?

Like for instance, bulldogs and terriers were originally crossed to combine the strength and power of the bulldog with the gameness and tenacity of the terrier - nothing wrong with  that, there are some very fine breeds around today descended from those crossings.  And Labradoodles..... I can see the benefit of crossing those too.  But I suspect the attraction of this one was purely another gimmick.  I wouldn't be surprised if they were crossed on the basis that the new "breed" would have a clever, cool sounding name. Neither do I, except if some loony calling themselves a "breeder" does the mixing on purpose just to separate some yuppie from $2500 of his nouveau riche.

It's not about mix breed dogs!  It's about delibrately breeding one breed to another simply so they can give it a cute name and sell it for as much as they can get for it.  They have no regard for the health of the puppies they produce they just want the cash.  I love mixies and will probably never own a purebred simply because there are so many wonderful mixies in the shelters, but I will NEVER condone the purposeful breeding of them simply for profit especially when there are so many dying in shelters.

I'm not a dog breed snob by any means...but to breed 2 dogs together to come up with some cutsey name is just plain wrong.
And to charge $$$$$ for them is even worse.
I'm sure many shelters have "boxadors"

I don't think people mix breeds just to call them by a cutesy name (I think a lot of the cutesy names sound really stupid).  And I don't see the problem with charging money for them.  Breeders charge money for purebreds all the time.  I really don't see the difference.

Oh, absolultely not! Mutts are wonderful, both ours are, and we'll probably always have the mixes. The problem is these yahoos breed them intentionally to MAKE a breed, and get huffy if you call the result a MIXED breed!

I think this topic has been covered endlessly. A simple search will reveal the opinion of most, and why intentionally breeding mixes is frowned upon.

edit: whoops, someone else posted before I finished typing. Darn my slowness[:D]

Some crosses are unwise.  Some breeds traits shouldn't be mixed with other breed traits.  I'm questioning the wisdom of intentionally mixing labs and boxers, the traits the resultant pups are likely to have and whether they would be desirable or not and if so whether it is sufficient reason to deliberately produce more mixed breed pups when there are so many in shelters needing homes and so many dying every day because there aren't enough homes to go round.

And it is a mixed breed.  It won't be a "breed" for several generations, until the desired traits are fixed it'll be as much pot luck as with any other mix as to whether you get more boxer or more lab in this or that pup.  Even littermates are likely to differ wildly in appearance and behavioural traits.

I can understand about not wanting breeds to mix that would have health problems.  But there are lots of purebreds in shelters too so by that reasoning purebreds shouldn't be bred either.
Of course I don't approve of breeding dogs like that out of sheer greed but I think there are good and bad breeders everywhere,  all purebred breeders are not respectable and all mixedbred breeders are not selfish and greedy.

Right now we have a "Labradoodle" at the shelter.  I bet someone paid $1500 or more for this dog.  They call these kinds of dogs "designer dogs" according to a fellow volunteer.
