    Crate Training Survey

I know there is information on crate-training all over this forum but I'm trying to gather some specific information, to see the variations in how other people have done it - and with what results - to compile some information for my web site (and perhaps to improve my own methods).

My two most important questions are
    1) Did you crate train a puppy or an adult dog?
    2)  How long did it take to train the pup (or dog) to quietly sleep in the crate all night?

Other questions are these: Did you start a few minutes at a time? With the door open or closed from the start? What treats did you use if any? Did you make your pup sleep in the crate from day one? Did he fuss? Did you ever let the pup out because he was crying? Do you think that set your training back? What mistakes did you make in crate training?

Any other info you'd like to provide is welcome.

Feel free to PM me if you don't want to answer on site.

    Thanks

    1) Did you crate train a puppy or an adult dog? Only adults.

    2) How long did it take to train the pup (or dog) to quietly sleep in the crate all night? Since I've only done it with adults, I've never had to have them sleep in their crates at night.

Did you start a few minutes at a time? Yes, though try a few seconds!

With the door open or closed from the start? Open

What treats did you use if any? With Conrad primarily it was feeding in the crate for every meal and rawhides, but he has SA and would usually not chew or eat a treat if he was alone. With Marlowe I used training treats as well as stuffed Kongs and chews.

Did you make your pup sleep in the crate from day one? n/a

What mistakes did you make in crate training? Well, Marlowe never really for real got crate-trained and we got complaints about his barking while crated so we had to change course quickly to close confinement in a room. I think with him it's just that I didn't have enough time at first when we brought him home to really do it right. I had to go right back to work and while I didn't have him crated during that time (confined in a room) so he was never forced to spend a lot of time in there before being trained, I just didn't have whole days to spend taking him in and out, progressively upping the time, etc....

Did you crate train a puppy or an adult dog?  Puppy

How long did it take to train the pup (or dog) to quietly sleep in the crate all night?  A few days

Did you start a few minutes at a time? Yes

With the door open or closed from the start? Closed, but briefly

What treats did you use if any? Oh boy my memory's not that good... I think a couple of mini-biscuits?

Did you make your pup sleep in the crate from day one? Yes but only for the first 3mo we had him

Did he fuss? A bit, not much at night but if we were in another room he'd whine & fuss

Did you ever let the pup out because he was crying? No. I would move or walk by so he could see me but not look at him. If he was really carrying on I would wait for a split second of quiet and let him out[:)]

Do you think that set your training back? No, crate training went pretty smoothly all in all

What mistakes did you make in crate training? I was under the impression a puppy was supposed to be crated almost every spare minute... luckily my BF talked me out of that. I would have spent more time tethering and less crating if I'd known that was "okay."

    1) Did you crate train a puppy or an adult dog? I have used a crate with both

    2) How long did it take to train the pup (or dog) to quietly sleep in the crate all night? about a week for one, first night with the other.

Did you start a few minutes at a time? Yes

With the door open or closed from the start? closed

What treats did you use if any? A treat despensing ball with small hard treats.

Did you make your pup sleep in the crate from day one? yes on the puppy. No on the older dog, although I wish I would have.

    Did he fuss? yes

Did you ever let the pup out because he was crying? [:)] yep

Do you think that set your training back? yes, I was learning as fast as the dog and often was set back.  Also had an SA dog that would break out of the crate.

What mistakes did you make in crate training? For my SA dog I should have used a different type of crate.

Did you crate train a puppy or an adult dog? Puppy, beginning at eight weeks.
How long did it take to train the pup (or dog) to quietly sleep in the crate all night?  Year and a half and counting...
Did you start a few minutes at a time? Yes
With the door open or closed from the start? Open during the day, fed him in there - closed at night
What treats did you use if any? Different treat-dispensing toys with kibble. Kongs with premade raw frozen inside.
Did you make your pup sleep in the crate from day one? No, he was only 5-6 weeks when we found him. He slept with me for 2 weeks.
    Did he fuss? YES!!
Did you ever let the pup out because he was crying? NO!!
Do you think that set your training back? N/A
What mistakes did you make in crate training? I'm not sure why he never got used to it. He stopped eating anything in his crate after a month or two so no amount of treats helped. He'll go in it, although he doesn't have to very often anymore, but he hates it. The only theory I have is that we had his first crate a tad too small and it was uncomfortable for him, but we bought according to the sit, stand, turn around guideline.

1)Did you crate train a puppy or an adult dog? puppies

    2) How long did it take to train the pup (or dog) to quietly sleep in the crate all night?  about 2-3 days

    3) Did you start a few minutes at a time?  Yes

    4) With the door open or closed from the start?  Open

    5) What treats did you use if any?  Yes to treats.  They varied, but were usually liver or something else of high value that was yummy

    6) Did you make your pup sleep in the crate from day one?  Yes

    7) Did he fuss? A bit, but not really as the crate started off right next to my bed

    8) Did you ever let the pup out because he was crying?  Nope

    9) Do you think that set your training back?  N/A

    10) What mistakes did you make in crate training? I did not start out using food and clicker as a reward.  Once I began using the click along with food rewards it became much easier to get him to get into the crate on his own.

    1) Did you crate train a puppy or an adult dog?
    2 puppies and 1 adult

    2) How long did it take to train the pup (or dog) to quietly sleep in the crate all night?
1 pup (Mick) and the adult dog slept through the night from the beginning.  Caleb got us up about 2:30 the first night to go out and pee.  We started picking up his water dish around 8PM the next night, and he's slept through the night ever since.

My two most important questions are 1) Did you crate train a puppy or an adult dog? Both dogs I have crate trained have been passed infancy. One is 9 mo and the other was a bit over 1 year old
    2)  How long did it take to train the pup (or dog) to quietly sleep in the crate all night? First dog slept quietly right away. Second dog, it took about a week

Did you start a few minutes at a time? With the door open or closed from the start? We were bad dog owners and didn't realize we needed to train them to go in their crate. We just put them and, closed the door, and said, nighty night.

What treats did you use if any? Some soft treats that came in a bag. They were called training treats.
Did you make your pup sleep in the crate from day one? Yes
Did he fuss? One did, one didn't.
Did you ever let the pup out because he was crying? no. But we did stay in the room for a bit until she calmed down and fell asleep. Even now, we put her in and stay for ten minutes are so before we leave her for the night.
Do you think that set your training back? No. They seem to be fine with the crate, they don't love it or anything, would rather be out than in, but it doesn;t bother them to be in there.
What mistakes did you make in crate training? Not taking time to get them used to it. But it didn't backfire on us. i do wish I could tell them to go to bed and they would just go. As it is, I have to food bribe them or physically put them in.

    1) Did you crate train a puppy or an adult dog?
    An 8-month old dog.

    2)  How long did it take to train the pup (or dog) to quietly sleep in the crate all night?
Since the dog was housebroken already when I adopted him I did not require him to be crated at night, but it took 3-4 days to get him comfortable being crated for 4+ hours when I was not home.  I think he would have been fine even quicker than that, but I acclimated him very slowly to head off any problems.

Did you start a few minutes at a time?
    Yes.

With the door open or closed from the start?
At first I started by getting him comfortable going in and out of the crate using games and treats, and by feeding him meals in the crate with the door open.  Then I progressed to closing the door during meals and lengthening the time I left the door closed.

What treats did you use if any?   I fed him meals in the crate; gave him cookies, training treats, and toys for entering the crate on command; left surprize cookies, training treats, and toys for him to discover in the crate; and gave him especially wonderful chewies, such as stuffed kongs and rawhide chews, when he was crated for any significant length of time.

Did you make your pup sleep in the crate from day one?   No, he was 8 months old when I got him and he has never been required to sleep in the crate (but he chooses to anyway).

Did he fuss?   No, not really.

Did you ever let the pup out because he was crying?   No, never.

What mistakes did you make in crate training?    He took to it like a champ!  I was surprized at how easy it was.  I really doubt I did everything 100% perfectly, but it went so smoothly that I can't identify any mistakes.

Any other info you'd like to provide is welcome.
Ace's crate is located right next to my bed.

Crate trained from day 1 about 3.5 months old
Made a mooing sound the first night for about 5 minutes
Door was closed and still gets closed at night because that is what he wants (he's approaching 18 months old)
We also crated him for periods of time during the day (he remains a serious explorer so this was necessary for his safety.  We have always had to close the door or he wouldn't stay in, regardless of training attempts.
Now however he goes in at night when he is done for the day - very cute - it stays open until he goes out for his last business and then he wants it shut and I have a sheet that I put over it at this point.  when we have left it open he doesn't sleep.
We laugh that closing it for him means that he's off duty

Did you crate train a puppy or an adult dog?  ;Puppies.

How long did it take to train the pup (or dog) to quietly sleep in the crate all night? About two to three nights.

Did you start a few minutes at a time? Yes.

With the door open or closed from the start? Open at first.

What treats did you use if any? I'd toss a piece of Natural Balance food roll in it for them to initially get them to go in, or I'd use a toy.

Did you make your pup sleep in the crate from day one? Yes, until they hit about 4-6 months old (depending on the pup) and I was able to trust them to behave and not get into any serious trouble.

Did he fuss? Only a little bit, not too much and then they all quieted down and fell asleep within about 15mins.

Did you ever let the pup out because he was crying? No, I'd wait for them to stop and then take them out (at night anyway, because they only whined when they needed to go outside). During the day, I'd put them in for short time periods and never let them out if they whined.

Do you think that set your training back? N/A.

What mistakes did you make in crate training? I'm not sure if I made any or not, it's been a long time since I've crate trained a pup. As far as I can remember though, I do't think I made any.

No crates here, never understood why people wanted to lock their dogs up in such tiny cages. Pups are put into an x-pen on a regular basis, usually with a few treats to eat, and aren't let out unless they are being quiet, just as a self-control exercise and to prepare them for trials. Would rather teach dogs to behave than cage them.
