    almost lost him

Well today started off great got up about 6:30am and I got ready for one more quail hunt with my best buddy.  We got into birds right away but they flushed wild because we were on the wrong side of the wind.  We moved on and Hawk hit scent of a HUGE covey. We worked those birds for a bit then moved on to a place down the mountian. Bam another monster covey. We worked those for the rest of the morining and well into the afternoon. So now it is time to pack up I was a few short of a limit but it was getting late and hubby wanted to eat. So we start back to the truck and Hawk runs up on some smashed down tullies by a small lake. I thought he might want to cool down a bit so I think nothing of it.....until I hear him yelp out in fear. So I run out on to the tullies and start to sink. I couldn't get to him. I was like in a cartoon trying so hard to move but I couldn't.[:o] My legs were quickly turning into jello so I crawled out on my hands and knees. I ran my hardest to the other side of the lake but I still could not see him. I called out and fiqured if I don't do something fast he is going to drown. So I took off my clothes and swam across the lake to where I heard his last crys. The water was ice cold but I didn't even feel it. I pushed throught the reeds and saw that only his head was above the water. I yanked him out from where his was stuck and helped him get his feet under him to swim back. When we finally got back to the shore he was so exhausted and cold that he could not walk. I had to carry him to the truck and put the heater full blast. Our six hour hunt did not end the way I would have liked but at least I didn't lose him.  Only now that I have time to reflect back on it do I realize I could have been a casualty as well.   I guess my adreneline must have kick in big time.  I mean I jumped into a lake, in the mountains, during winter.  When I got out of the water my skin was red from the cold but I would have done it again. After all he is more than just a dog to me and I had to save him no matter what.

Thank heavens both of you are ok! I know how you feel--I would rescue Gypsy or my cats as well.

What a story!  Glad you were able to get to him in time, Val, and that you are both ok!

Ya thanks.   I felt a surge of panic at first but I knew that I had to find a way to get to him.  My husband gave me a big lecture when I got home but I couldn't live with myself it I didn't do whatever I could to save him.

OMG how frightening!  I am glad you are both OK.  I think most of us here understand how you feel about your dog, and your need to save him.

[sm=angel.gif]You're his Guardian Angel.  Has he let you out of his sight yet?  I once helped Crusher out of a bind, and he wouldn't leave me alone for days.  He would sit outside the bathroom door and cry if I locked him out.

Oh, I absolutely understand! I did the exact same thing for my Stevie dog, who was about to drown in an Alaska pond. This was summer, and it was warm outside but there is NO warm water in Alaska. I just ripped off my shirt and jumped in, tennies and all, because it was a mining pond full of Bad Things.

Yes, you and I definitely could have drowned for sure! But just like you, I didn't think twice.

Did you stop to think how amazing it was that you could pull him up while treading water? That rather defies the laws of physics....except no one knows how the force behind those legs when a life is on the line! [:D] Turbo-tread!

Sounds like you had a great day, except for the exciting ending, though!

Wow I never really thought of that.    I don't know how I did it.   I just saw his face full of fear and exhaustion and pulled as hard as I could.   I remember thinking to myself as I was swimming I have to save him....I have to save him.  I am glad you guys understand because my family thinks that I was crazy.   I kept calling to him so that he knew I was coming.  The best thing was he had on his e-collar with locator beep on.   I just stripped down to uddies because I wanted the least amout of drag as possible  but I can imagine the cold from a pond in Alaska.    Burrrr I was there during March a few yrs back and the temp was only-14F.  You are one tough cookie.  As far as being by my side well he has been rather klingy today.  He has slept most of the day but moved rooms every time I did.

Yep, it's the Super Adrenaline MOM thing! We all have it! [:D]

Yes, we CAN defy the laws of physics if it involves our loved ones!

Wow, Val.  After our discussion about our pointers, I got panicky reading your post.[:o]  I feel as though I personally know Hawk now!  I just flinch when I think about how terrible it would be if you couldn't have saved him.  He is so lucky to have you for a Mom. Give a warm fuzzy rub from me, Grace and the Trudster![:)]

Wow what a scary story! The most danger we have with poodles is when they fall off the couch.

You're a good mom and I'm glad you got your boy!
