    beef jerky

    I bought a food dehydrater and was wondering if I can make beef kerky for my poodles . how would you make it without salt? please ,any suggestions?

    I haven't tried beef yet (waiting for a good sale), but I've done chicken-- buy cheap legs, boil them, then just cut the cooked meat up and dehydrate away. Was planning to do the same with the beef. I think you'd have to use salt to cure it if you tried to dry it raw??? not sure.

    thanks. I never thought of cooking first to eliminate the need for salt.
    but I was thinking when I give them a raw meat bone they eat on it for days and it does not make them sick by it being left out at room temp, so if I dried raw meat without salt would it be bactria anymore than the bones?

    I just put on pieces of plain raw beef, chicken or what ever. No need to cure it

    Some friends of ours made some beef jerky that the dogs like a lot...it's pretty spicy so they always want a drink after it, but it's a good treat [:)]

    Chicken jerky is softer and makes a good training treat.

    you can dehydrate raw meat without cure or salt, but keep it refrigerated to prevent mold and freeze some if you make a large batch.

    thanks you guys , i think i will try chicken jerky next batch
    i made a small batch of beef the first time and they already eat it all gone!
    i also dehydrated a batch of sweet potatos and they love them.
