    website about breeding

I hope this is allowed. I think this website is great at letting people see the realities behind breeding. Maybe it can be made as a sticky thread in the breeding section of the forum?

my gosh its a good thing I'm not a breeder.  I don't know half the stuff on that checklist/questionaire, despite being here everyday...[:D]

The thing I have found, is that people get very ticked off if they put a deposit on a future pup and the bitch doesn't deliver a certain amount of males.........males are the favorite by far.

I've been told that there is no money in breeding purebred dogs.  The breeders just do it as a hobby.  How much truth is there to that?

If you do it correctly with health tests, contracts, 100% return regardless of age of the animal, etc...You will cover expenses, but not necessarily with each litter.

BYB typically make money, that is because the up front costs (and procedures etc.) are ignored

A good breeder wont make any money.

A bad BYB will make tons of money from sick and cruel breedings.

There are basically two different types of breeders, those who do it for money and those who do it for the love of dogs.

A responsible breeder does not make a profit from it but they sure do spend a lot on breeding. Testing and everything else adds up. Now for it being a "hobby" well...most breeders might get offended by calling it that. Dogs are not a hobby, they are part of their everyday lives, they are family. They breed their dogs for the future of the breed, to improve the bloodline, to have healthy dog, to get closer to the standard. They do it mainly because they love the breed.

BYB and puppy mills do it for $, they can care less about testing, temperament and health. I had a neighbor who bred purebred GSD and used the money she made from them to pay for college. She was by every definition a BYB and bred her bitch every heat, feed the worst cheapest food and kept the puppy in the worst conditions because all they were to here was $. A responsible breeder would never allow their dogs to go threw something like that and why they spend the money to make sure their dogs are the best of the best.
