Poem---TAKE CARE OF YOUR PETS

My family brought me home, all cradled in their arms. They cuddled me and smiled at me and said I was full of charm. They played with me and laughed with me and showered me with toys. I sure did love my family, especially the little girls and boys.

The children loved to feed; they gave me special treats. They even let me sleep with them – all snuggled in the sheets. I used to go for walks, often several times a day. They even fought to hold the leash, I'm very proud to say.

These are the things I'll not forget – a cherished memory. Now that I'm in the shelter – without my family. They used to laugh and praise me when I played with that old shoe. But I didn't know the difference between the old one and the new.

The kids and I would grab a rag, for hours we would tug. So I thought I did the right thing when I chewed the bedroom rug. They said that I was out of control, and would have to live outside. This I didn't understand, although I tried and tried.

The walks stopped, one by one, they said they hadn't time. I wish that I could change things; I wish I knew my crime. My life became so lonely in the backyard, on a chain. I barked and barked all day long to keep from going insane.

So they brought me to the shelter but were embarrassed to say why. They said I caused an allergy, and then they each kissed me goodbye. If I'd only had some training when I was a little pup, I wouldn't have been so hard to handle when I was all grown up.

"You only have one day left" I heard the worker say. Does that mean I have a second chance? Do I go home today?

I just thought that it was so sad and i makes me wish i could rescue so much more.

wow I was not expecting that ending. That brought me to tears. Thanks for sharing that I think that should be up in all shelters, and everyone who brings in a dog should have to read it.

Ah geez, this post made me cry in front of the plumber. That picture just breaks my heart.

It's very, very sad but unfortunately true. So many animals come back because the owner wouldn't take the time.

Here's a story I read when I was researching abused and puppymill dogs (I wanted to see what the usda and the law did about it. apparently, not much.)

That "How could you story" was so sad as well. It is so heart breaking to hear of people adopting animals and then give them up. I couldnt imagine giving up any of mine. They are my family and families work and get through an obstacle that is thrown at us. SO WHAT if the road gets bumpy it will always clear up sooner or later. Its just depressing to hear of all the ones lost because of selfish people

Boy is that picture a familiar sight for me. I did just that on several occasions while working at the shelter... to be honest I wish I would not have seen that picture. Im starting to feel like an emotion wreck.

In my life so far I have owned 4 dogs out of shelters and my family has 2 I picked up off the street.

As soon as we get our living situation more stable I will be back at the shelter. Although there are specific breeds I would enjoy my heart is with the dogs in the shelters.
