Girl dog HUMPING another girl dog.

Girl dog HUMPING another girl dog.

On January 12th, we got a 5 1/2 month old puppy.  (No pictures yet, sorry!)  Both of our existing dogs seem to be fine with her, but last night our 1.5 year old female dog started humping our newest dog.  [&:]  Both are spayed.

I know it's a domination thing, but my question is... how do girl dogs even know to do that?  How is it even instinctual?  Female dogs don't - and never have - had the parts to do the humping.  What makes girl dogs (in general) even do this?

I dunno. My Jack humps, fairly regularly. I find it amusing, and when it's inconvenient, I just redirect her (by telling her to sit or do something incompatible to humping). Females in heat hump, too. Maybe it's just part of all dog brains?

its just a instinct that they have. It is a dominent trait all dogs keep.

LOL, I was going to post the same question, but chickened out. Our new doggy weighing only 12 pounds and tiny as anything can roll our 35 pound corgi/basset/bullterrier mix over onto her back, and then she starts to hump. Crazy. It drives poor Heidi crazy, but I haven;t figured out a way to make Sally stop- short of placing her in the crate.

My 1 year old lab did not give me such surprise up to now. Im considering adopting another one[8D]

My grandmas female dog does this. You know what their vet said? "Cause it feels good."

I always heard that it was an act of dominance as well. Our boys always do this to the neighbor dog (also male)whenever they see eachother.

More often than not, it's just excitement - not dominance, and certainly not sexuality.   They do it because it feels good, because it's fun, sometimes it's a habit, etc..  When it is related to dominance, I subscribe to the theory that the "humpee" is actually the higher ranking dog and the "humper" is just an enthusiastic wannabee.

I have a female dog who humps her beanbag every night before she goes to bed. I doubt she's trying to demonstrate her dominance over the poor beanbag.

She was at it again last night in full force.  Weirdo dog.    It's all more of a game of "chase, catch, hump" than anything.  Ok, so I'll try to view it as "fun" and not as "yuck".   Sasha (the younger dog) doesn't really seem to mind - although I sort of do.

Mudpuppy - you never know, sometimes those beanbags can really get out of line and need to be shown their place.  [;)]

lol She and my Bree dog have something in common. Bree has an affinity for dog beds - quite an interesting show when the in-laws were over one day...

Slick goes at it with his dog bed every evening after his supper...  The kids call it "cowboy" lol - as in Slicky is playing cowboy now!    Feel free to borrow that Laura, I'm sure your IL's will nod and smile, no?

[sm=lol.gif] Thanks, that's a nice way to put it. The IL's probably would nod and smile. They already know I'm a little [sm=crazy.gif]. Good thing they don't ever stay for the main event - sometimes DH holds wrestling contests with the dogs. He gets down and plays with them, and sometimes will pretend to hump one while making this stupid laugh - then two others try to hump him. I've had to 'splain to him that it's just not good for ANY of our mental health to encourage that. *sighs* Boys will be boys sometimes.

Dude, our main event includes two children - *wearing cowboy hats*, humping whatever side of the dog bed is free.  Usually it's a boy on each side and Slick in the middle.  We should get together and develop a circus show..

Okay, not to get too in depth here, but all these replies lead me to a question. I was one of the ones that always heard it was an act of dominance, so I never really questioned it.

Now with the humping of the beds, I can understand that it may feel good, be exciting, etc. But with the humping of another dog, I don't quite understand that theory, because of all the dog-to-dog humping I've seen, the dogs genitals aren't really making contact with the other dog's body (maybe the occasional bump, but ya know what I mean [:D])...So I can't understand how this would feel good unless there was that contact made. Maybe dogs are different in that sense...or maybe it's just the act of the humping action that feels good or causes excitement. I'm just unsure  - sorry for the "detailed" question!
