People Food

My dogs eat whatever they can get their paws on.  They know I dont eat my pizza crusts (and we eat alot of it here) so they always get some of that.  In summer when I "sacrifice one for the grill gods (burn anything)" the dogs get it.  If we have chicken or ribs around I always make sure the kids have a special bone bag that gets taken to the outside trash IMMEDIATLY after we eat.

Just remember that there are some things that are NOT safe for your dog to eat:

Raisins and grapes are not good, and can be dangerous.

Chocolate isn't good. Toxic dosages have to do with how dark the chocolate is and how much the dog weighs.

Macadamia nuts are very toxic to dogs.

Onions are supposed to be bad, but I wonder about this. There have been some reports of hemolytic anemia due to accumulated toxins from onions. Dogs can't digest onions the way we do, so then end up with toxic byproducts.

Of course never any cooked bones.

Caffeine and alcohol can have very bad results, as well.

    Did I forget anything, guys?

Dogs are lactose intolerant, so milk is a no-no.  It interrupts the absoprtion of other nutrients.  Sometimes it manifests itself as diarrhoea, other times the dog eats his poo because there is so much undigested "stuff" still in it.  Other times you don't see any outward adverse effects at all, but do bear in mind that the dog won't be getting as much goodness fron his diet if you include milk.  Dairy products are ok in small amounts.... occasional blob of yoghurt or cube of cheese for example.

Xerxes, the butcher at my local grocery store thinks I'm nuts for buying beef ribs for the dogs. (He knows because I have him cut them in half and he once wondered why.)

Deb, not only does Deva get lost in the bunch, that's only part of the paque in the picture. There are 8 I think in that shot. There are 15 total.

Oh yeah and I forgot, raw potatoes are toxic to dogs too.  So if you feed a raw diet, avoid potatoes!

They are?? When I was a kid, our family dog would regularly wander over to the macadamia nut tree for a snack. She'd crack the nutshells in her teeth. She seemed quite fond of them and never got sick.

We often cook rear stake - bloody rear. Can I give my dog a bone from that?

Wow, you got macademia nut trees near by?
We get -20F in winter in Minnesota, ticks in spring, +100F and humidity in summer.

Well, it's not that bad. [8D]

Blue gets raw plus greenbeans, apples, carrots, eggs, and a little peanut butter, but that is all he will eat.

Tina when bones are cooked they become brittle -- particularly something like a t-bone bone or rib bone.  Don't give those cooked -- you CAN give them before they are cooked tho -- just cut the meat off and grill it and give the dog the raw bone (except freeze it before you give it to kill the bacteria)

Raw potatoes aren't good for dogs either? I didn't know that......well, I don't feed them, but when we cut up potatoes for mashed potatoes a few cubes usually fall on the floor and Mirelle eats those. I guess I'll have to be more careful than that...unless it's one of those things that won't hurt them in small amounts like that?

raw potato skin with a slightly greenish tinge is poisonous for both dog and human. Dogs can't digest raw potatoes so no point in feeding it raw, cook it first.

If you define "people food" as anything that doesn't come out of bag/can specifically labelled "for dogs only", I guess my dogs mostly eat people food. I feel bad for those poor dogs who go through life eating nothing but dry preserved kibble. Can't be good for them.

It's like a person going through life ingesting Ensure and nothing else, isn't it? Ensure is supposed to be "complete nutrition" and my mother-in-law lived on it for 3 months when she was sick. Ugh!
