    People Food

Do you give youre dog people food? I do and see nothing wrong with it. Now when I say people food, I talking things like Chicken, beef, some veggies. After we eat I place a few bites in the dogs bowl, they wait until I'm finish cleaning up the kitchen, then I give the ok, and everyone goes to their bowl for the goodies. Comments?

I pretty much look at food as food. Granted I don't eat kibble, but food to me is food - both for me and my dogs. One of my dogs eats raw, meaning she gets raw meaty bones, muscle meat, organ meat, and other things. All of my dogs get other foods such as cottage cheese, green beans, meats, eggs, yogurt, other veggies, and so on. [;)] Even for the dogs that get primarily kibble I try to add in as much fresh foods (the less processing the better) as much as I can!

I homecook for my crew.  Always  buy plenty of meat, fruits and veggies JUST for them.....

I think it's healthy. A little 'real food' gets the healthy microorganisms in their digestive systems working. Better poop, better over health, etc. I like to give Scout chicken sometimes, ocassionally eggs... and I froze some leftover steaks to cut up as treats. I am now the family scavenger!

I was alway told not to give over 10% people food mixed with dog food and its ok. I maybe wrong but that was what I was told was ok.

yeah my dog eats everything i do, excluding the obvious foods that could harm him. unfortunatly i am not as formal about it as you are, i give him bits while im cutting up meat for a meal, and im even very guilty of giving him peices of my food while im eating. i know thats a big no-no, but he looks like he just wants it sooo bad, how can i resist [:o]

It's only a no-no if you don't want your dog sitting at your feet every time you eat. I personally couldn't care less if my dog begs me. She always gets the last bite of my food, and always has. When she begs other people, that peeves me, but, for example, my mother hardly ever gives her anything, so Cherokee hardly ever begs my Mom. People who reinforce the begging get begged, people who don't, don't. It's pretty easy. [:D]

that is a very good point and so very true. any time im at another persons house eating and theres a dog around they always beg me, i always comment about how they know i am a suckerand i always say i would beg too if i had to eat kibble.

Just remember that there are some things that are NOT safe for your dog to eat:

Raisins and grapes are not good, and can be dangerous.

Chocolate isn't good. Toxic dosages have to do with how dark the chocolate is and how much the dog weighs.

Macadamia nuts are very toxic to dogs.

Onions are supposed to be bad, but I wonder about this. There have been some reports of hemolytic anemia due to accumulated toxins from onions. Dogs can't digest onions the way we do, so then end up with toxic byproducts.

Of course never any cooked bones.

Caffeine and alcohol can have very bad results, as well.

    Did I forget anything, guys?

I think those are all the greatest hits, Jean! [:)]

There's nothing wrong with giving your dog people food as long as it's healthy food. Donuts aren't good to do him any good but they don't do you any good either! I eat healthy so I share with my dog a lot... especially if I'm eating eggs, egg is good for the coat! I don't give him anything spicy, too salty, or too sweet because he's got a sensitive stomach. I also try not to give him too much in the way of carbs (bread, pasta) but he can have a taste.

I also believe that if your dog is not sensitive to the food you are giving him or her that it should be fine.  I have been shocked by some of the foods my dog has enjoyed, for example I dropped a few jalepeno slices on the floor once and Abbi ate them up before I could stop her and looked at me for more.

My DH gets so mad at the dog watching me eat, but he is more of a pushover than I am.  I really don't care if she just watches, but if she ever starts whining she will be in a different room while I eat.

I feed my dogs people food but only whole foods (meat, fruit, etc.) They also eat raw chicken wings and beef ribs. They to get to eat pizza crust.

My husband however has been caught on occasion feeding them such things as cheezits (sp?)
