I think someone tried to steal one of my dogs...(long)

I think someone tried to steal one of my dogs...(long)

Ugh. This scared the crap out of me. It happened around 1:15 PM this afternoon, but I was too shaken up to post about it until now.

When I give my dogs raw bones, I usually corral Axl, Pepito, and the puppy in the kitchen. I send Ogre outside on his tie-out, since the other dogs will *not* stop stealing his bone, and he lets them. This way he can enjoy his bone in privacy without being bothered. Our back door has a screen door and a main door, so when Ogre is outside I leave the main door open and the screen door cracked, so I can hear what's going on outside. The computer is right by the door, and I'm on it or in that room most of the day, so I'm always literally feet away from where Ogre is tied out.

Well, he had been outside for about 10 minutes, contentedly crunching his bone, when he started barking. No big deal, I figured the neighbors were probably outside or he saw a squirrel or something. I yelled an "Ogre, leave it!" out the door and kept doing what I was doing. Usually, that's enough to quiet him down. This time, he kept barking. In his distinctive "I see someone who should NOT be here" voice- much different from the puppy barks he gives when he sees a squirrel or a neighbor. So, I started to get up to see what was up. Just as I stood up, I heard someone whistling, as if they were calling a dog...and then a "C'mere dog!" At that point, I RAN out the door.

Our backyard is huge (our house is on an acre lot), and partially wooded. It's also unfenced. Near where the grass ends and the wooded area begins, there's a creek  that seperates our yard from the neighbor's behind us. There was a REALLY scruffy, shifty looking man standing on the back of the creek, still technically in the neighbor's yard but just feet away from mine. I was standing on the deck, which is MUCH higher up than the bank he was standing on, so he couldn't see me at first. I stood there for a moment, not really knowing what to do, (I was home alone and this is the type of stuff I have nightmares about...so I was pretty scared) and he continued whistling and trying to get Ogre to come to him...all the while looking around like he was worried someone would spot him. Ogre was still a good 30+ feet away from him, bristling and snarling and acting VERY unhappy. I couldn't believe the guy was still trying to get him to come to him. I would have been scared to death. [&:]

At that point, I came to the railing of the deck, where he could see me. As soon as he saw me, he turned and started walking away quickly, but not running...like he was trying to pretend he hadn't been doing anything wrong. I don't know how I managed, considering I'm a huge weenie under normal circumstances, but I yelled "HEY! C'MERE!" and surprisingly, the guy stopped and turned around. Before I could say anything else, he said "Oh, ah, I was jus' readin' your meter!!" (Right. I know the guy who reads the meter. Apparently, meter readers have reason to stand in the middle of the neighbor's wooded backyard, about a zillion miles away from said meter, with no vehicle, and no uniform. They also look like they haven't showered in about a zillion years and dress like bums. The guy looked homeless. [8|])

I yelled "No, you weren't. And you have about 5 seconds before I call the cops." He yelled back, "Man, F*^% you!!" and ran for the street. I grabbed Ogre, ran inside, locked the door, and called my husband.

I probably should have called the cops, but I was NOT even thinking at that point. I have serious anxiety problems and I pretty much live in fear of being robbed or assaulted somehow by someone. Even if I had, the guy would have been long gone before anyone showed up. I just called my husband, and then my mother, and freaked out and had a full blown panic attack.

The worst part is, if I had stepped out of the room for even a second, this guy could have stolen Ogre, or hurt him, or whatever the hell he had been planning on doing. Now, I'm afraid to put Ogre out on his tie out...which is a problem, because even with regular walks, he gets REALLY difficult to control if he can't go outside for a while to blow off steam. I guess from now on he's only going to be able to go out with me standing right there watching him the whole time. [&o]

And the other creepy thing is that there is NO way you can see my backyard from the street, at all. This guy was obviously just walking thorugh people's yards and either scoping out houses to break into or for things to steal...there's no other reason he would have been back there. I'm terrified now. I may call the cops and give them a description and let them know this guy is up to no good.

Sigh, I'm just so upset that this happened. With how paranoid I am already (I won't even leave the house alone. Without my husband, I'd be a total shut-in.) this just puts me over the edge. I'm not going to sleep for weeks.

And this just makes things so difficult now. Ogre eats outside, plays outside, and goes potty on his tie- out. Having 4 dogs in the house is rough...that's also the only way I can ever have a little bit of a break. Axl and Pepito won't go farther than a few feet from the deck, so I let them outside to go potty on their own, and on nice days they go out on the deck to sleep in the sun. The only dog that I actually have to supervise 100% of the time is the puppy. Now I'm afraid to let Ogre go out on his tie-out, and afraid to let Axl and Pepito go out on their own. I feel like I'm completely under seige in my own house. [&o]

Sigh, I can't wait to move. This house is in a nice neighborhood, but the projects are nearby and we get alot of shady people over here because there are fewer cops. This isn't the first time I've been approached by someone with ill-intent (we've had a bicycle stolen, and a group of teenagers once tried to bully me into selling Axl to them for $20 while on a walk....they almost got physical with me) but for some reason this scares me so much more.

Now I'm afraid to take my dogs outside. I'm so glad I only have 7 more months to go in this town. [:(]

So scary! I can't say I blame you for being nervous about that. Ick. Just ick.
    • Gold Top Dog
Oh wow!  I'm sorry to hear about what happen.  I also think that person is trying to get your dog near him.  Glad to know your dog is fine.  I hope it won't happen again and it's a good thing you got up to look whats going on.  [&:]

Oh my god I would be freaking out too. There is no reason why someone should be calling your dog to them, that right there means he was up to something. You should probably call the police, there probably isn't much they can do but at least you can alert them that something strange happened, and you are worried.
I had to laugh, did he really think you would believe he was a meter reader???HAHA they are in uniform and the last thing they want to do is CALL a large barking dog toward them. That is very scary to think of what he wanted him for.  Hopefully you scared him away, and he knows you are on the look-out. Good luck and keep us updated if he or anyone like him.

I would still call the cops and make a report. Maybe this man has been poisoning dogs, it could be that, too, you know. Maybe there have been some break-ins, and you are the only person who has actually had a good look at this guy. You never know, they might really appreciate your call.
    • Gold Top Dog
I am glad everything is ok but please file a report ....
    • Gold Top Dog
I always go outside when Zeus barks.  I think it lessens the dogs anxiety.  They know that you will be there and they don't have to handle things alone.

That being said...it really doesn't sound like your dog would have went with the guy. He would have thrown  a fit and you would have caught the guy before he got anywhere.

Buy a can of pepper spray and keep it by your computer in case there ever would be the possibility of a showdown.  And of course file a report just in case.

I know you can't help but worry...but by your description of your dogs response,  I have total faith that your dog will let you know if someone is trying to steal him....or is up to no good.

Oh my how scary.  I'm glad everything turned out ok. But I agree that you should call and report the guy just to be on the safe side.
    • Gold Top Dog
I totally agree with jeano and georgie that you should call and report this. This guy is a criminal (trespassing) and I'd bet dollars to donuts that's not his only transgression of the law. I'd contact the neighbors as well and alert them that someone was in their yard, they may have had stuff stolen or damaged.

I am definitely in the "file a suspicious person report" camp....BIG TIME! I am glad you and Ogre are safe and I am so sorry you both were so badly frightened.
    • Gold Top Dog
Totally freaky.  I want to move out in the country, but that's a scary scenario.  I have to say good for you for speaking out even if you were terrified.  Not sure that it was the right thing to do, though!

Yes, criminal trespassing and he will be identified if further problems arise.  Call your PD!

Well, I called this morning and filed a report. The officer I talked to was really helpful and gave me some interesting info.

When I told them my address, they became VERY interested. Apparently there have been several car break-ins, and things stolen from outside people's houses, in my neighborhood and the surrounding neighborhoods over the past few weeks. And, the kicker- two seperate dogs have mysteriously "dissappeared" from their owner's backyards in this time frame as well. [:o]  Apparently most things have gone missing during the day, when people are at work.

Many people have reported things stolen- but I'm the first person to call and give any kind of description. I was able to give a REALLY detailed description of the guy and they said there's a very good chance this is the guy, or one of the guys, responsible for the thefts. (Gee, ya think??)

They said they've stepped up the number of patrols in the area in the past few weeks, and now that I think about it, I *have* seen more cop cars in our area than normal.

They got all of my contact info, and asked if I would be willing to testify in court against this guy, since so far I'm the only one to actually witness anything. That kind of caught me off guard, but I agreed to it. Honestly, I doubt they'll be able to catch him. He was a pretty generic looking guy, so unless they actually catch him in the act, I don't see how they'll really be able to identify him. He pretty much looked like half of the other people walking down the street. [&:]

But anyway, yup, I filed a report. Hopefully it'll do some good. In the mean time, I'm going to let my neighbor (who I've never spoken to...I hide from people. [:D]) know that this guy was in their backyard.

Brittany....well done, that took courage. You'd be surprised how many people the cops can "talk with"  because they fit a generic description, and how familiar they are with the "normal" homeless population (and in turn how quick the normal homeless pop will be to turn in a new person) vs somebody that just showed up recently...so don't sell them too short as to catching him.

    You done good!
    • Gold Top Dog
Good job!  I bet you feel better, too.  I hope they catch this person.  I don't want to know what he, or whoever, is doing with teh dogs.  I'm glad Ogre is safe!

the nerves of some people!  but good for you!  people would be surprised how reporting little things like that will be a tremendous help!

similar thing happened to us!  i'm an insomniac..and my bed is right next to the window facing our drive way. one night at around 4 am..i heard a car door slam in my driveway, and heard the sensor light came on, i looked out the window to see someone in my driveway...and like you, i live in a very safe neighborhood, etc.

my brother just happened to be downstairs to get a drink of water, when he heard it too...he opened the front door, and the kid walked right up to my brother and pretended to ask..."uh...does tommy live here?"  then he walked off with another guy..and a car speeds up down the street, picks them up, and they peeled off.

we called the cops right away...those dumb kids...i guess they couldnt see all the cop cars parked in DRIVE WAYS in my neighborhood...(we have about a dozen cops that live in my development)

one of my neighbor was home and probably heard it on his radar..a k9 unit..and he pulls right out of his house...and a few minutes later, cause those kids peeled out of our development was caught...for stealing like 2 dollars in change from my sister's unlocked car....

but get this...they were locked up for 2 whole days...and got charged with stuff like: possession of burgulary tools, breaking and entering, credit card fraud, burgulary, etc.

i guess they were going down to all the "safe suburbia where people didnt lock their cars etc. cause they're too trusting" and just going into people's car and stealing what they can!
