The foundation of the golden retriever was the now-extinct Tweed water spaniel. Over the years, crosses were made to numerous other breeds, most of which differ significantly from the dogs we know today by the same names:
- red setters,
- black wavy-coated retrievers
- Labrador retrievers
- Newfoundland or St. John's dogs, and
- bloodhounds
I think he's all Golden....just doesn't have a proper Golden coat. Given the history mentioned above and what I've personally seen Golden coat type is hugely varied in color, density and texture. Perhaps this boy simply has more of that "wavy coated retriever' in him [

ETA: I also found this on the "Tweed Spaniel"
The coat of the Tweed Spaniel was liver coloured and curly, but ‘liver coloured#%92 should be interpreted widely. In those days “sandy”, “fawn” and “brownish” were also used to describe liver-coloured dogs. There is a print by John Carlton, showing a dog of a spaniel/retriever type, curly coated, long tailed and carrying a duck. According to tradition, this engraving should be of a Tweed Spaniel
