Curly coated golden?

    Curly coated golden?

Has anyone ever seen a golden that has a curly looking coat? The rescue that I'm looking at has one like this. It's not quite as curly as a curly coated retriever's, but it does have some rather tight curls. I was just wondering if full blooded goldens can have a coat like this, or whether he may be a mix. Honestly, it makes no difference to me, but I was just wondering. I have never seen a golden like this. Sorry I don't have a picture. If I get him I will be sure to take some.

    I'm thinking goldendoodle maybe?

I don't think that they can.  My guess is that he's a poodle/golden mix, since some of them have curls, just not very tight curls.

I agree, sounds like Golden-Poodle mixes I've seen.

Well, he's an 85 pound bruiser of a boy. Solid muscle from what I hear. So, I don't believe that he could be a goldendoodle, but I have been wrong before. [;)]

By the way I tracked down a pic of him.

Goldendoodles can be that big, but I must say, the photo makes all the difference... I take it back, he doesn't look like Goldendoodles I've seen. Maybe just a weird coat, or, I might be crazy but possible Chessie mix??

The foundation of the golden retriever was the now-extinct Tweed water spaniel.  Over the years, crosses were made to numerous other breeds, most of which differ significantly from the dogs we know today by the same names:
    • red setters,
    • black wavy-coated retrievers
    • Labrador retrievers
    • Newfoundland or St. John's dogs, and
    • bloodhounds

I think he's all Golden....just doesn't have a proper Golden coat. Given the history mentioned above and what I've personally seen Golden coat type is hugely varied in color, density and texture. Perhaps this boy simply has more of that "wavy coated retriever' in him [;)]

ETA: I also found this on the "Tweed Spaniel"

The coat of the Tweed Spaniel was liver coloured and curly, but ‘liver coloured#%92 should be interpreted widely. In those days “sandy”, “fawn” and “brownish” were also used to describe liver-coloured dogs. There is a print by John Carlton, showing a dog of a spaniel/retriever type, curly coated, long tailed and carrying a duck. According to tradition, this engraving should be of a Tweed Spaniel

That's what his foster said actually. She said maybe a slight hint of chessie. She said he's all golden in all other aspects though.

He really doesn't look like a golden/poodle mix.  I say either his coat has been cut and it's just growing back that way, or maybe he's a chesapeke bay retriever/golden mix.

Thanks for all the fast replies. It really doesn't matter to me whether he is purebred or not. I had just never seen a coat like  that on a golden before. I kind of like it though, it gives him character. [sm=biggrin.gif]

rwbeagles - That's some interesting info. If you don't mind, where did you find that?

We have an ANCIENT Golden now in our program (he's being fostered out of the shelter) who has a coat like this.  He could be a relation of yours, he looks THAT much like him! Yes, he's ALL golden.

However, I saw a young Chessie bitch two weeks ago whose coat looked a lot like the one above, so who knows?

I fostered a golden bitch two years ago for about a month with that same type of coat. All golden, just weirdly coated. Was kind of a pain, as grass and stuff caught in it rather than falling out properly, but wasn't horrible to deal with.
