Sad Day.

    Sad Day.

Today was the worst day in years. Sherman was a miniature long haired dachshund, the most beautiful dog I've ever had. He was also the best dog i had ever had. However, he was my dad's dog, and omg my dad loved that little pup. He was about a year and half years old when he died this past saturday night. He had never chased cars and had always been cautious around them but someone driving hit my dog Saturday and my father is devastated. My father and I lost my mom a few years back and sherman was his companion. He called me crying and since I've never heard my dad cry but once, I did as well. It was one of the sadest moments ever.

HOWEVER, God seems to work in mysterious ways. Before Sherman died he bred with another dachshund. He is a Tan and Brown and his mate was Dapple. I would like to know if this mix makes an attractive dog, and if it's a good idea to get a pup of Sherman's? Will the Tan and Brown be dominant--I'd like the pup to look like Sherman. And will the puppy have the same mannerisms as Sherman?

I am very sorry for the loss of your dog, but am quite disturbed about the breeding part.

But I'll keep my mouth shut.

    Run free sweet doggie.

I'm sorry for your loss, but why was the dog left unattended outside?

Also, you're asking us if the puppy will have the same mannerisms as your old dog? There's no way to know, also why would you care if it's an attractive dog or not? If you wanted a piece of your old dog to be still with you, any of his puppies should satasfy that need.

And finally I don't know what you mean when you ask is it a good idea to get a puppy from that litter? What are your reasons for wanting a dog and was this a purposeful breeding?

Dapple in Dachshunds is the same gene as merle in Australian Shepherds. Dapple is dominant. However, the dapple dog has two genes, one for dapple and one for non-dapple. Because all genes come in pairs. (the odds of her being double-dapple are very very slim. those dogs are usually mostly white and have health problems.) What color dapple is she? Not sure, but that might tell you what her base color is. So odds say that each puppy has a 50/50 chance of getting the dapple gene from the mother and being dapple, and 50/50 for getting the non-dapple gene and being solid. Since I have white dogs, I am not familiar with the genetics of what you get when breeding Brown and Tan with whatever color the mother carries.

As far as mannerisms, dogs take more after their mother than the father. The chances of one of the puppies acting a lot like Sherman are slim. When people get a replacement dog that looks a lot like the dog they lost there can be issues. It is human nature to expect the new dog to act like the old dog, and they don't. Then people get frustrated and disappointed, unhappy with the dog. The person uses the same types of communications and behaviors with the new dog and the new dog does not understand. A puppy that looks just like Sherman, especially his son, and ends up with your father will be carrying a whole lot of baggage. It's best that he gets a dog that is different in one or more significant ways. Color, sex, size, breed.

I'm very sorry for your father's loss. He obviously loved this dog and Sherman helped him with the loss of his wife. I hope he does get a new dog or puppy. I also hope that he keeps the new one on leash when outside of a fenced yard. Best wishes for your dad.

I'm so sorry that happened to Sherman.  I hope you and your Dad are able to find another dog similar to Sherman in looks and temperment.  Rest in Peace dear Sherman

I'm very sorry for your loss of Sherman.

The brown and tan color (it's actually called chocolate & tan) is recessive, so the puppies can only be that color if both parents are, or carry for it.  Chocolate & tan dapples can be very pretty dogs.
