neighbor's pit bull puppy

• neighbor's pit bull puppy Timbersmom Posted : 1/9/2007 11:57:50 PM My neighbor's puppy and Lizzy are friends. I think the pit is about 5 months. he is bigger than Lizzy now and very strong but they play well. the problem is that sometimes he gets loose and then he jumps and nips on me non stop. I told my neighbor when I brought him home and they are being more diligent about not letting him escape but how can I tactfully get them to teach him some manners? I am happy he is so sweet and friendly but it's going to be a serious problem if he keeps that up when he is bigger. he must be 40 lbs. already. I think if you were to tell them enough times to keep him in their own yard, they might get the hint. But something you can do when this guy jumps up and nips at you is to turn your back on him, no eye contact, and keep turning away from him. • spiritdogs Posted : 1/10/2007 7:30:32 AM  The best thing to do is turn away and ignore him when he nips.  (Some Pitties are stimulated to play by noise - ever notice how growly some of them are themselves when they play?) If he persists, walk away slowly and get out of the room.  He will soon consider that you are boring and will go back to playing with your dog. With the fight we are battling pit bull owners really need to know that their dogs actions reflects upon all pit bull owners. While it dosnt seem to be a problem now, ti can potentially get worse. I would approach them from the angle that you just learned about spontaneous attacks that occur to pit bulls from people who fear or hate the dogs. In the past year two pit bulls have been hung in ther own back yard by a crazed neighbor, several have been set on fire, adn just this week one was decapitated and left on a car hood. Not ot mention plenty of people steal pit bulls to use them as fighting practice for their terrible purposes. I had to bring him home and I couldn't even walk one step without him jumping all over me. holding on to his collar to keep him on all fours was the only way I could get him home. he also almost succeeded in digging under my fence. I don't think they have gotten him neutered yet either. You can approach them in a  concerned way versus a irritated way, that may help. If you like I could try adn find links about the poor pit bull stories so they realize the severity. You are absolutly correct that bully breeds are not best for first time owners. As a pit bull owner myself, thank you for having a compassionate, realstic view of where the problems really lie.....with the owners. Bottom line is your concerns are not only for your benefit, they arnt keeping their dog safe. I must be the only person that walks my dog around here. everyone else just leaves them in their back yards but as soon as I get a chance I will talk to them again as tactfully as possible. the puppy is so beautiful too. he is dark brown and white and the brown has reddish gold highlights. I live in a subdivision that is all cul-de-sacs and people around here seem to think it's ok to let cats and dogs run loose because the streets aren't busy. it is safer than living on a busy street but an animal can still get run over or run out to the main road.
