OH GOSH!

    OH GOSH!

So I just came home to find something I really never hoped I would. I saw something sort of greyish looking with what looked like a tail, and low and behold, A DEAD RAT! all wet and looking a little ragged around the edges. I'm guessing either the cat found it somewhere and snuck it into the house and the dog got a hold of it, or he some how found it in the house already! yuck! Anyways, he was CHEWING on it!(the dog was, not the cat) Do I have to be worried about him maybe getting sick?

Probably not, if the cat killed the rat.  If it died from poison being set out somewhere you might have a problem.  Keep a close eye on the dog and if you notice anything unusual or different, give your vet a call.

And keep the rat! That way they can tell which poison it was if your dog gets sick! (Plastic bag in the freezer works.)

Things will probably be fine, but just in case!

we don't have any rat or mouse poison or anything like that in our house, so I hope we can rule that out. He seems fine now, and it was over an hour ago so I'll just keep an eye on him!

The poison could have come from someone else house, which is slow acting so it might still be in the rat.

Julie is right, tara.  Some rat poison is slow to work and the critters can leave the house where they were poisoned and wind up dying in someone elses house or yard.

My dog got into mouse poison last weekend and he's now on medicine for two weeks and then he has to go back for a blood clotting test. I not trying to be alarmist, but this is potentially very serious.

A few years ago one of our grandsons was visiting from out of state for Christmas.  While I was in the shower, DH decided to take the kiddos and the dog and walk to the park.  I came out to the kitchen ready for that first cup of coffee and what do I find?  A HUGE dead rat, sprawled right in the middle of the kitchen floor.  So I got out the rubber gloves and a couple of plastic grocery bags, scooped him up and took him outside to the trash.  When the troops came back I asked DH what he was thinking to just walk out and leave a dead rat in the middle of the floor. His response?? "Gee, I didn't see it." Hmmm. Right.
