    Tips for travelling with Dog?

HI everyone. I apologise if this subject has been exhausted elsewhere- i did search the forums first!
I'm making a journey soon which involves a four hour ferry journey and another 3 hours in the car, with my border collie cross. I've booked a dog-friendly cabin for the boat, but further than that I feel horribly unprepared! We rescued this dog in May last year and are still learning her little quirks and habits and I have no idea how she's going to handle the travelling. Does anyone have any top tips for me?

Thanks everyone, and happy new year

    Bach Flower Rescue Remedy:

It's an herbal anti-stress tincture that may help... they sell it at health stores, upscale pet shops, and Whole Foods Market. You can take some too! [;)] It doesn't work for everyone or every dog but it works for many.

Have plenty of water on hand of course... pre-measured meal portions of kibble in baggies, poop bags, crate, and I usually bring a ball and a bully (chew) stick although they don't often come into use while traveling.

My first advice is get a check up with the vet before your travels.  The vet may give you some meds that would help calm the dog if it gets too excited.  Usally it's something they give you "just incase"  The vet can also give you some good advice on how to pre-pair.

Check with the places you are traveling with and see what their requirements are for animals, see if you need any type of health certificates or any other papers you might need befor you leave.

I did a routine vet check before I went.

Also, I got a car harness to buckle my dog down in, and her nice bed and blanky, a bone and toys, travel bowls for food or water, a leash, and all tags and registration, etc.

Make sure the dog stays in the backseat, in the middle if possible.

    Yay! CONGRATS!

All very good suggestoins.  Here's a few other things I do- take a copy of vaccination records, license receipt, etc (I keep these in the glove compartment of each vehicle as well as my training bag); make ID tags with the phone number of where we'll be staying, and also one with our cell phone numbers; ;pack a long rope so your dog can run and play, but still be safe; first aid kit, baby wipes for paws and mud, doggie towel, comb and/or brush.  I measure out meals into plastic baggies, too.  Don't forget any meds your dog takes (I always measured out enough for one more day then however long we were going to be gone) and poop bags for clean up.
