Baby Asprin Okay?

    Baby Asprin Okay?

Bailey hurt her right shoulder this morning while playing with Minnie... she yelped and then cried for a minute but then stopped.  She slept for a while the jumped off the bed and cried.  She has been sleeping by my chair for a few hours now but cries a little each time she moves positions.  And when she walks she limps quite a bit.  I will bring her to the vet tomorrow if it doesnt get better but Im wondering if giving her a baby asprin in te meantime would be okay, she is about 16 lbs and the asprin is 81 mg.   I know coated would be better but we dont have any.

Also I dont know if this matters but she is sleeping on the couch right now, and while I was typing this she woke up suddently growling but quickly stopped.  I went over there and she seemed fine, maybe it just bothered her suddenly in her sleep...?

I have given my little girl baby aspirin, just one, she weighs l5 lbs. but think the last time it made her sick.

Its really killing me to hear her cry like this, any suggestions would really be appreciated.  Is waiting until tomorrow okay???  I just dont want to go for them to state the obvious and tell me to wait it out.

If she's really crying I'd take her in today! Use your best judgement!

I wouldn't give her anything at this point, since you don't really know what's wrong.

If you decided to wait until tomorrow you could try a heat pack on the sore spot since it just happened. Then you switch to a cold pack later. (A bag of frozen peas works great. [;)] )

I think its ice first and then heat.  Ice reduces the blood flow thus reducing swelling and inflamation...heat increases blood flow.  That's what they always told ME for my boo boo's anyway......

Not when I ran track it wasn't, Glenda. Nor my chiropractors, either.

Since Im not positive the exact spot Im gonna try the aspirin...
    hope shes ok with it....

    Re: Ice or Heat

I think it depends on the type of injury.  From everything I've ever been told...ice is used first when the injury is acute (like a sprain) and especially when swelling is a problem, usually used within the first 48 hours.  With chronic or "overuse" type of problems (like muscle strain,  spasms and joint pain) then heat is the way to go.

so i should ice her sprain...?  or whatever it is?

Well, everything that I know about it applies to humans, but I can't imagine it being different for dogs.  I don't think that it would be a bad idea.  You can use a bag of frozen veggies as suggested or else put some ice into a plastic bag.  I always wrap a lightweight towel around it too.  Just keep it on her for a few minutes at a time (no longer than 20 minutes max) and keep moving it around a bit.  You can reapply several times throughout the night, just make sure you give her skin enough time to warm back up inbetween.

Whatever you decide to do be very careful moving an injured dog.  Out of pain or even fear she might snap or bite.  Keep us updated on how your dog is doing.

Please take her in first thing in the morning. When Boss' former owner kicked him and fractured his front leg, he acted a lot like you described. He did walk on it, just limped and cried in pain a lot. The break itself was not obvious at the time, but it is now due to not healing properly.

Dogs tend to hate ice -- you can try it (and ice usually is first) but you likely won't get far.

Baby aspirin is ok but any aspirin causes tummy bleeding.  Chammomile would be easier, but you may not have that.  But Definitely VET FIRST THING tomorrow.

Sorry I havnt been back, my husband plays his game[8|]

I did give her one baby aspirin... didnt seem to do anything.  She pretty much slept all day.  At around 6 she got up and started trying to play with Minnie again and made a few little cries so I made her stop.  A few little whimps while changing positions... seems to be limping less.... she is playing with her busy dog ball right now.  I will be taking her to bed soon and will bring her in the morning if she is still limping.

Do ya'll agree that if shes not limping anymore that I dont need to go?  Or should I go anyway?  Because if its something like Trish said I would hate for it to be healing wrong... but then again she would probably still be limping right?

I would take her, dogs have a high tolerance for pain, and they try to hide it, if she is crying like that it's pretty bad.
