My parents got a puppy a couple of years ago in Colorado. I guess they were BYB's, but both parents were AKC registered and health/temperment tested. 6 months later there was another litter and I flew back to pick up Loki! He was such a sweet little boy on the plane ride home and has been a joy ever since.

I saw Odin on petfinder and drove 3 hours to pick him up. Rescuing him from the shelter was one of the best experiences of my life. And watching him change from a nervous, shy boy to an incredible, smart, outgoing boy has just been wonderful.

My first dog Jaycee, mixed breed (now gone after 16 years) my mother got her from a fair where people had a box full of puppies. She couldn't resist not taking in another pet.
Maggie, another mix breed, found her on the side of the road. (she was 10 when she died and never the same after Jaycee left)
Shadow, the cat that thought he was a dog, my father got from a dumpster when I was...5yo maybe? (17 years old I think when he left)
Now Gobi the cockroach killer, we rescued him from a lady who found him living in the bushes behind a dumpster.
And very soon... Lilu, we just have to find her running around again and she will have a home.
All of my dogs have been mixed breeds, to me they seem like the best dogs to have.
Oh, and the rabbits, my wife took them in from her students whose father said he was just going to let them go in the park because they smelled funny and weren't very smart. (they are rabbits how smart did he expect them to be?!?)
All of our pets are rescues and I don't think I would have it any other way.

We got Maggie from a breeder. Actually I was at camp and my parents got her. The breeder was one of my dad's friends, and so we had gone over to see the litter, and decided we liked Maggie or another female named lily the best. but dad said 'no asking for a dog' so we didn't. The next week I went to camp, and when I came home, there she was. So getting her was a bit of a shock, especially since during camp I had told my friends that I  thought my dad would never let us get a dog.
My cat, who is over the rainbow bridge, was from a shelter.
I'll probably get my next dog from a shelter, unless I decide I want to show.

well, im not sure how to answer this. my dog came from my husbands friends parents, i'm not sure if they meant to breed the dogs or if it "just happened", but they were in no way qualified to be breeding animals. i would say my husband rescued berserker. he heard they had puppies and he knew i had always wanted a dog of my own, so when he went to see them the guy told my husband they were all already sold (supposedly the parents were great bird dogs). there was one pup he saw that he knew he wasnt leaving that house without, he was so small and sickly and looked nothing like the rest of the litter, he just knew that was my dog. the guy refused to take any amount of money for the dog, but my husband knew the guy was a junkie so he found the right price if ya get what i mean. not the most ethical means of buying a dog, but i could care less, my berserker would have died if my husband hadnt persisted. he was about 5 weeks when he was brought home, and since he was such a runt he was already accustomed to eating hard food, he had fleas so badly he was anemic and to make matters even worse he had not been wormed and had roundworms and tapeworms. he was so meek and sad the first two days we had him, he spent the whole time laying on my chest, but once he realized the hard part of his life was over he went BERSERK, never seen a more hyper crazy puppy in my life. not too many people say i want the sick puppy, but he turned out to be a wonderful happy dog after some medical attention and of course lots of love. i wouldn't have ever once thought of trading him for another.

so i dont know if i would say breeder or rescue or shelter, but that is where and how my dog and i found each other.
