Where did you get your dog?

Where did you get your dog?  Breeder, rescue, Adopt or etc.?
What would you recommend to others looking for a dog?[sm=dance.gif]

Shelter.  If everyone went to a shelter, then less dogs would be PTS.

Blue is from the shelter his shelter is Destiny's Knight Rescue.[8D] They try to rescue most gsd, but they do get other dogs as well which I found out after I adopted him. Good thing mom doesn't know that when we adopted him and she still doesn't know. I got my wish![:D]

All three of mine came from rescues.  Two I found on petfinder.com.  I like very much that they were fostered in home settings so I had a pretty good idea of what I was getting.  I highly recommend it!

Dodger was abandoned at 4 weeks old...so he was a rescue.  The local shelter let me keep him while we looked for his owner...when he could have gone up for adoption - I was too attached!
Whenever I am ready for a new addition, I will always go through a rescue or shelter...

Our first and second Pyrs both came from breed rescue, rescued within 5mo of each other.  The first one is still with us (our female), the second one we had to have put down in 2000 after battling an extreme urinary defect for 2yrs that could not be cured.  The third (our male) is from a breeder whom I've now known for all of the 9yrs I've been in dogs.  Our English Setter is from a breeder in Canada.

Both of our breeders are excellent and although I'm 'closer' to my Pyr breeder, I regularily see my ES breeder at shows and we keep in touch.

I always recommend either a responsible breeder, breed rescue or shelter for aquiring a dog.  I've given out quite a bit of help to folks at work and such, in finding the right dog for them or steering them in the right direction.  It sucks when they don't take our educated advice......but I do what I can to keep folks out of pet stores and away from BYB's.

Both of my dogs are from shelters, but different ones. Millie is from the county SPCA, and Max is from the Trenton Animal Shelter. I would recommend that people try to rescue dogs, although after seeing the trouble that one family that I, and a few other people suggested rescuing to, and the issues you can get when you acquire a rescue dog, I have to say it's certainly not for everyone.

I kinda, sorta think that my 3 failed fosters count as rescues?  Right?

Kayla came from a shelter the day before she was to be euthanized.
    Lucy came from the street.
    Minnie came from the street.
    Bailey came from the shelter.

And I would always recommend going to a shelter.

Joey came from a friend. I had just met her and she told me about a litter of puppies she had in her backyard (accidently). She did not charge anything, gave the pups away to good homes for free.
So actually Joey was a mistake and should've never happenend eventhough I cannot for 1 second imagine my life without him! My friend didn't breed her dog to make money, she just didn't know any better, now her dog is spayed so there won't be any more accidents :)!
Our next dog (Joey needs a little sister!) will be a rescue though!!!

I got Grady from a local rescue group that posted him on Petfinder.com.

Aspen, is rescued from a family that didn't care about him.

I agree with Jen about some rescue dogs having issues & my guys are no exception.  Their issues are nothing that I can't deal with, accept or work with them on.

I got my dog from the breeder for free.  He was sent back to the breeder because the old woman who had him her health is failing.  My friend told me about him and I picked him up and brought him home.  the dog I had before  was a Rottie who didn't suit the people who had him as a pup, I was asked if I wanted him and I took him.  He passed away in January after I had him I decided to go with a different breed, I didn't want to compare another dog to him.  I say rescues and shelters or if someone you know knows of a dog needing a home meet it and see if they fit your family.  I think giving a dog a home who doesn't have one or lost theirs is wonderful!  It makes me feel very good to have been able to give homes to dogs who needed them.[:D]

amelia came from a local rescue organization that we found through petfinder.com, and it was nice that she was almost house trained when we got her.

sydney came from the local humane society. no real reason we didnt go through a rescue organization again, we were just looking to add another dog to our family and fell in love with him.

i would definitely consider either a rescue or a shelter dog. i would also have to say that unless you specifically want a puppy i would also consider adopting an older dog. you do miss the cute puppy stage, but #1 that doesnt last that long and #2 puppies can take a lot more work than a dog that is at least 1 yr. old. i was looking at a boxer rescue site the other day and all the dogs they currently have are over 1 yr old and almost all (if not all) of them are house trained and have some degree of obedience training.
