    no more puppies at walmart

So on the news this morning, there was a story about a new dog law that was passed in a county here in california (sorry can't remember which) that bans the sale or giving away pets in public places. I thought it was interesting, I wonder if it will actually work, seems like from the story a lot of people are protesting.

That's great news, and certainly a step in the right direction. The only major problem I could see it potentially causing is that now the bybs and irresponsible owners who previously gave dogs away at Walmart, flea markets etc. might just end up dumping them somewhere instead. Hopefully though it will discourage the majority of them from breeding in the first place.

It's nice to see some more progressive laws being introduced for breeding and selling. If only it applied to pet stores too! [:@]

Thats great!  But unfortunately, most WalMarts are on Private Property, thus making the law void for those managers that allow it.

That is good news! At least it is a step in the right direction that will hopefuly lead to more steps in the right direction!

Has anyone here ever seen puppies being sold in Wal-Mart?  I never have, so I'm curious.

Never seen dogs sold inside Wal Mart, but every weekend the parking lot is full of people selling puppies.[:@]

Its like every weekend down here in the summer! It drives me up a wall!

The Walmart here is in a shopping center and the people are always at the outskirts of the parking lot, which is for use for all the stores.  Wouldn't that be public parking since they don't charge a fee and therefore covered by the ban?

I see your point, but I think the ones that are left over probably get dumped anyway.

One hot summer day I saw at the local W: under the first tree, kittens and lab mix pups for sale; next tree, beagles, third one, Great Danes; fourth, pit bulls.  I'm certain they were all show quality, health and temperament tested pets.  NOT!

Recently, a columnist for the local newspaper wrote an article that included an anecdote about a stray, half-starved GSD that ended up at his house, and his wife discovered the dog was pregnant.  His story went on to say that the puppies were born two days before Christmas and that when they were about 6 weeks old, he was going to get a neighbor kid to sit in front of "the local supermarket" to give them away.  I fired off an email to him, gave him the what-for, told him I seldom read his column and didn't know if he was being facetious, but that his idea was a horrible one for all the reasons.  I was so darn angry that I forgot to mention that I thought it was not a good idea to even print that because even one person reading it might think it was an acceptable way to handle the situation.  I did tell him I thought it was gracious to take the mother dog in and asked him to please do right be the puppies.  People...[:@]

Now if only that applied here. Everytime we go to Walmart there is a guy further up that always sells birds. Well lately he has been selling pups. Beagles, basset hounds and Cocker Spaniels. It sucks because these babies are under the hot sun all day and cramped in tiny cages with no food or water.

Then, one day I was going to Costco, and there was this guy selling Golden Retriever pups on one side and lab pups on the other. I know this guy was a back yard breeder but boy those puppies were GORGEOUS and so were the mama dogs. So big and clean and shiny, if I didnt know any better I would have bought a pup from him.

About a week ago there was also this guy selling Golden pups across the street from Walmart. He had the pups in the back of a raggedy pickup and mama dog chained to a tree. Mama dog was skinny and dirty, and the pups were all a bright red color, dull coats and short haired. Happened like it did with my moms Golden. She was purchased from a BYB and has absolutely no coat.
