Benedryl for fireworks....

    Benedryl for fireworks....

I just read through an old post of mine asking about some of the things the vets prescribe for fireworks and stuff and I know those are bad so those are out.  I want to give Minnie benedryl tonight because she truly gets traumatized by the fire crackers.

Would the dosage be the same as for allergies?  (1-2 mg per pound).... Also how long before they start should we give it to her?

The dosage would be the same. As far as when to give it to her, it depends on what form you are giving. The tablets usually take 30 to 45 minutes to kick in and the liquid kicks in faster.

Sofia is better now, but that used to freak her out badly. I learned that you can use melatonin as well. Which is good because benadryl (diphenhydramine) doesn't really work for her. Her vet prescribed Valium, which does work, but I'd rather not give her that.

I think the dosage would be half of a human's. Cut the 3mg tablet in half. This is for a 45-50 lb dog. Maybe someone else knows better about dosage.

Melatonin is the body's substance that regulates sleep. It works great to help me sleep, btw.

    Thanks to you both!
