Vet WAS MAD at me!

    Vet WAS MAD at me!

So I took my dog in for her HW check and exam.   Hhhmmm.  So first thing they tell me is I'm behing on my bordadella shot. I explain I don't need one, and if I board her I will bring her in for one.  Then she tells me its time for her vaccinations. I told her I don't want them, that it has been 2 years only since she got vaccinated and I am following the 3 year protocol that ALL the veterinarian schools are recommending.  Then she said "yes, some are going to 3 some are going to 2, we are recommending the 2 years with Lepto vaccine in between the year they don't get the vaccination.   I told her I did'n want the lepto shot, that it is the one that causes the most reactions.  She said "since they have been giving it on that odd year by itself she hasn't seen any trouble with it."  I told her that I knew the shot only covered a few strains and their are many strains of the disease and I don't want it.       She ended up saying something like "don't think that everything you hear over the internet is right,  hopefully you will also listen to your vet!"  She also said something about not listening to the breeders either.  Of course she didn't like it that I asked for a prescription for Interceptor (their fault for not selling it) and then told her I was only giving it about 40 days not 30.   YIKES!      All in all it cost me $92 by the time I walked out.   The fecal was $17.00. Gee, I paid $8.40 last year for a fecal,,,at a different clinic.  HHHmmm!
I have to say, she was really really good with Bubblegum,,  rubbed her until Bubby tried to sit on her lap,,,so then she could do the exam without a problem.  I liked that, but in the end I didn't think she liked me, and I don't know if I will go back.

That sucks. Millie went to the vet today to. All she really needed was a 3 yr rabies shot, and that's all we wanted for her, but I couldn't go with. They wanted to give her something else, I think it was influenza something or other. My mom questioned it, they said Millie needed it for whatever reason. I understand that she probably didn't feel like arguing, so she just let them give it to her. My guess is that I will have a harder time when I refuse some vaccines for Max, and a lot of that for no reason other than I look younger than I am.

Don't worry Jen - you'll get tough when you need to. Just think of yourself as the momma bear protecting her cubs [:)].  Fortunately the vets here in Calif use the 3 year protocol, but when I had vaccinations done last year for Sassy, they wanted to give the Lepto too.  The vet was pretty good when I questioned it though and I didn't have much trouble convincing her that Sassy didn't need it.  And the Bordatella (sp?) - why would anyone give that on a routine exam if you're not boarding your dog?  Doesn't make any sense.

Dyan - I do know what you mean though about having a vet that works well with your dog.  It makes such a huge difference that you sort of have to weigh the pros and cons of the whole visit.  As long as you were able to get out of there without feeling too pressured, it might be worth going in the future.  I think once they see that you're educated and proactive in your dogs health, they treat you very differently.  I know thru this whole thing with Sassy, they've learned to listen to my opinion and observations.

Dyan, sounds like she had a bur under her saddle or she relates to animals way better than people. Maybe she got bit more often as a pediatrician and switched to bein a vet huh. College education isn't a guarentee of good cust svc.  Sheesh.  :) Jules

I took Zoe to the vet yesterday for the first time because I thought she was sick (I had taken her to a diff't vet once last June when I first got her but we have had no need for a vet since).  While there I asked if he could give me interceptor since they normally do heartguard and he said no prob.  I mentioned that my last vet gave me the 11 to 22 lb. version since Zoe is between 10 and 11 lbs. and he said not to worry it is very safe (but on here everyone says I should do less... next order will def. be 10 lb. and less).  I also asked if he will do the 3 yr. protocol on the other shot and he said they do it, not on all dogs but he will for me since I want it.  I think I am going to get her rabies done for $7 by the humane society instead of him though.

I am not very experienced with vets but doe $42 sound like a fair price for a regular vet visit?  My last vet was 30 something but bloodwork etc. is 90$ and at my new place it is $60 so I kinda expected everything to be less expensive.

That sounds like my vet. She also said  "don't believe everything you read on the internet" when i told her I did not want to give Jetta a combination shot.[:@]

Yeah, they got "a thing" about us being on the Internet reading about our dogs. They so much liked it better when we listened to them no matter what!!!
I'll give them the fact that there ARE some "way out" people with "way out" ideas on the internet (and other places I'm sure)  but most of us can figure out fact from fiction. And come on, if ALL 27 (or is it 29) veterinary schools are calling for 3 yr protocols,,,, is that so hard to figure out?
Smilee my dogs exam was $39.50, Then the heartworm test at$32 and then the fecal at 17 and a 3.50 waste desposal fee.  I don't know what normal is...I hated the 17 for the fecal after paying $8 last year!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last Saturday we brought the dogs in for shots (we were going away and were going to board for the first time) and it ended up costing $483 for the two of them.

Yanke, WHAT kind of shots were those????[sm=eek.gif][sm=eek.gif] Holy moley, they should have been given in solid gold syringes for that kind of dough!!!

Isn't it a shame when doctor's get defensive when their patients start becoming more educated? Grrr. It aggravates me when doctors "talk down" to the little people who are their patients. Just a pet peeve of mine.

Thanks for all the prices everyone. Bailey goes in to the vet for her annual check and HW teat next week and this is a new vet for us so I'll be interested to see how the prices compare to yours. I'll let you know what my vet's response is when I decline the distemper booster they say "is due." Thankfully she doesn't need rabies until 2007. Dyan, they charged you $3.50 for throwing your Bubblegum's poop in their garbage can? Everything costs something I guess! [8|]

LOL LOL LOL!!  Sheesh,,, I HOPE it was for more than that. Afterall, for $17.50 throwing it away should be in there!!!   I think one time someone explained to me that needles from the blood test costs the vets money. God forbid they should take it out of their $39....lol!!

I'm feeling cheated.  I checked my vet bill (we went today too) and I was charged over $4 for them to throw Wrigley's poop away!  Please send me in the right direction to read about the three year protocol...what is every three years?  We've been told that vacs are every year.  We just had rabies, bordetella (he will play at day care maybe and the dog park), and distemper.  I am not going to share what I spent, because I am feeling really embarassed.[sm=sad.gif]

*Just decided to not go back to that vet (we're new in town)!~

Every time I go to the vet it costs me $100. Every time *I* go to the doc, for minimum visit, it's the same.

You guys....just be glad you don't live up here.
