Wal-Mart

    Wal-Mart

Have any of you heard of Wal-Mart being a hot spot for people that want to sell, buy, or give away dogs?

Yep. Five times I've went there, and there was big baskets saying free to good home[:'(]

I've been lucky enough to have only seen it a couple of times...once someone was giving away kittens, and once someone was selling skinny Pit puppies for 150 bucks. [:'(]

I've seen people try to do it outside of Petsmarts, but they generally get chased off. No one seems to care at Wal-Mart though.

Pretty much every weekend you see at least one family there selling puppies back home where my parents live, I guess it could be worse, at least they aren't dumping them somewhere :(

A long time ago I saw a truck with a big cardboard sign on the side that said FREE PUPPIES.

I have never seen at the walmarts where I live.  And I go there a LOT.  It happens a lot at other stores in the next county over though.

I've never seen it at the local Wal-Marts here either.  That used to be a pretty common thing - to see someone with a box of pups or kittens sitting in front of a grocery store giving them away or selling them for very little. [:@] I really think taking them to a shelter would be a much better alternative.  Usually it's pretty easy to get young pups or kittens adopted.

I can see why -around this area- people would rather do that than give to the local shelter, which is really a high-kill pound. But it has gotten better through the years as instead of dumping the pets on the old conutry road(it wasn't uncommon to see alot of strays running around). There's only two things that had bothered me about it...I always stop to ask about the litter and tell them I hope they find good homes. There was very cute puppies boxer mixes and a lady picked up the soulful eyed black pup and said "I guess we'll try it". Like what is going to happen when it doesn't work out? The other was when I walked up to a man with one puppy. I asked is that a lab mix? He said no they are full-blooded and sold all the puppies for 125. The looked like mixes to me.

it happens constantly at the wal-mart closest us. i cannot believe wal-mart allows it to go on. i've called animal control before and they told me they couldn't do anyhting about it, that it was wal-marts property, therefor they would have to be theones to tell them to leave. unless of course there was some sort of abuse going on......apparently spending all day in a hot parking lot in a cage in the back of a truck or van does not constitute abuse [:@]

When I worked at Walmart, no one was allowed to sell anything outside.  Anyone that did had to have permission from the Store Manager.  And those were only allowed for charity events.  Our Walmart is a District Store, meaning that we not only have a Store Manager but a District Manager so policies are usually strictly adhered to.  But I could see it happening at a smaller store.

Last summer, someone was giving away free kittens, promising to buy a small bag of Special Kitty for the new owner if one was taken.  I'm sure Wal-Mart didn't hate that.

I have never, ever seen that at our Wal-Mart and I'd better not either or I would raise a fuss for sure.

I try to avoid Walmart, but gosh darn it, there are some things that I just can't afford to buy from the regular grocery......a quart of creamer at walmart is 98 cents.......it's 2.69 at the grocery.  Yes, the cheap stuff is a store brand and not a "name" brand, but it all tastes the same to me and when I can almost get three at wallyworld for what I'd pay for ONE at the grocery, sorry it's a no-brainer.

We had to go one Saturday last month to pick up DH's RX....again, sorry if I can pay $4 at Walmart as opposed to $27 at RiteAid, well, I've gotta do what I've gotta do......the pickup truck was parked not IN the parking lot but on the approach to it....selling the sickliest looking pit bull pups I'd ever seen.  My first stop was customer service...they called the manager who went out immediately and said since they weren't IN the parking lot persay, he couldn't throw them out.  Called the police who said, well, gee, it's all private property (this Walmart is in a little strip mall) so they couldn't do anything........so being royally ticked by then I just parked right near his truck and waited until he got people to stop and then strolled over to start asking questions.  Now I don't know all the RIGHT questions to ask regarding pitties, but I threw in OFA certified hips in the parents, eyes, etc and made people nervous enough about the health of the parents and lines that no one was buying while I was there![:D]  And, I ticked the guy off enough that he started to threaten me.  Hey....private property and I have as much right to be in this parking lot as you do......the police were "patrolling" to make him uncomfortable enough to leave and the officer just happened to see him get in my face and start screaming and waving his fist at me.

He told the officer that I was interfering with his right to do business.  I told the officer I was merely asking the pertinant questions regarding the health and temperments of his breeding pair, their parents, grandparents, etc, wanting to know what vaccines that the 6 week old pups had had, had they been wormed, etc.  The officer made him pack up his pups and leave AND sited him for not having them confined to a crate, but rather loose in the back of the covered pickup truck.

I'm not a very big person....5'4" or 5'5" depending on who measures me, and a size 6 or 8 depending on the cut of the clothes.  This guy was well over 6 foot tall, built like a marine and mean.  The officer laughed that I must have the "biggest set of balls" he'd ever seen to stand up to that guy.  About this time DH comes out from finishing the shopping and is floored to hear from the cop that I just stood my ground against this guy who he was finally able to run off for threatening me.  Of course I got a rather unpleasant tongue lashing from the DH for putting myself at risk, but the officer has a brother who is a REAL breeder of mals and he gently told DH that I'd done good!

One down....a zillion left to intimidate.  BIG, BAD me!  it's us little ones ya gotta look out for!

I've been to Walmart a zillion times over the years and have never, ever seen anyone giving away puppies or kittens.I wonder if people only do it in some areas and not others. [8|]
