Just curious....Have any of you purchased a dog from a pet store?

I havent ever bought a dog from a pet store but I have bought (or gotten free) dogs from back yard breeders. I have typed this story a million times but Weston turns out to be epileptic, when i ask "breeder" about it, she says yup, his grandma had seizures and his parents were either siblings or mother & son.

Marley came to me with Parvo, her bother also came with parvo. Marley was the one one of the two who survived.

I cant tell you how happy it makes me that there isnt a single pet store here that sells puppies.

this may have already been adressed, but after reading some of this i am wondering what one would think should happen to the ;puppies?

    Gayle and seemingly, DPU

What really do YOU expect? There is no rosy pink and fuzzy yellow outcome for the pet store pup...they come from Hell on Earth and when one is sold 10 more take it's place. My concern is not for that one (which would be sent to a shelter, breed rescue or back from whence it came if not sold)...but for the 10 behind it, (not counting the other 10 that didn't even make  it to be old enough to be sent to the store)...and the 10 shelter and rescue dogs that will die because of it. One needs a wide angle view to consider the mill problem...not focusing solely on those faces behind the glass.

"Supplying" dogs for the public is not the job of anyone...should not be...because I'd say fully half of the people buying dogs do not need  a dog, are not equipped for the breed of dog they want, get puppies when an older dog would fit in much easier and better, or are those folks ready to give it up at the first life change or sign of trouble.

At this point (and this is a big thing to admit for me) I am willing to admit that buying a dog should not be as easy as it is...thru any outlet. At this point I am willing to say people should be licensed before they are even allowed to LOOK for a dog...at this point I think some knowledge of dogs, training, and behavior should be mandatory. Ain't gonna happen...but one can dream. In the meantime what we can do is not support with our dollars or  words...store that sell pups, or BYB's that also contribute to the POPP.

that still does not answer my question as to where the already existing puppies should go or what should be done with them? im not saying pet stores are ok, not at all, i just want to know what the fate of those pups should be in everyones humble opinions. i am already quite aware of the circumstance which surrounds them, as it is echoed very often here.

    Actually Gayle...yes it did.

i wanted to know what everyone thinks should be done with them, not what their current fate is.

Your question was fully answered, I think, Gayle.  Pet stores that don't sell the puppies either offer them for a very reduced price, send them back where they came from, or dump them at a shelter.  When my dad got his pet store pup (from petland, blegh), they had several older puppies that didn't sell that they were giving away for 50 dollars (including the vet visit).  Puppies that end up in shelters will be PTS or adopted by someone who's trying to help in a more responsible manner.

Edit:  about what i think should be done?  I THINK they shouldn't be in that position in the first place.  What will happen to them is a reality.

no one really has to answer my questions, but to state that they have already been answered is not true.

This has been discussed before that reputable breeders do not make their dogs accessible to the general public and the general public won't tolerate the screening. Shelters take the place of a business? Come on! What I think what bothers most is the store's living condition and where the pups come from. As I said in my post I got 3 dogs from a Petshop with AKC registration, a family history, and they turned out to be very healthy. Do you know if DOA has jurisdiction of the stores themselves? Is that where reform should be?

The general public? Most people that buys these puppies should not have dogs, it has already been pointed out that they go to homes where once they grow up and the family has no time for them they are dumped in shelters or abandoned. I know my local city shelter's adoption process isn't  very hard to go threw, its probably just as easy as getting a puppy from a petstore but at a cheaper price , maybe you'll have to wait a few days if the dogs is in the lost section to make sure if it's owner comes back but dogs that are ready for adoption can be taken home that day and come with FREE spay/neuter and vaccinations, now that's a deal! and the dog can be brought back if the dog doesn't work out now I don't think petstores allow you to take dogs back. People need to realize that dogs in shelters require just as much work as puppies probably even less, just some basic obedience. Now unfortunately the puppies in the petstore may have to die or be sold to labratories but if you and more people can resist that cute face you will save hundreds of dogs from misery and torture. Just like with other things public education is very important whetehr you educate people to get their pets from shelters so there is less demand for puppy mills or you educate them about the horrors of where those cute little faces came from. Or you may have to go to the root of the problem the mills which are perfectly legal try through legislation to outlaw puppymills and what not.I'm not sure I know how to use the quote button oh well.

There is a pet store here that advertises like crazy every holiday, from Christmas to Valentine's Day to Easter.  I will not walk into a pet store that sells puppies because I know that I could never stop myself from buying one and they would do nothing to stop me or check if I should be a dog owner.  Those puppies don't deserve that treatment they recieve at the store, but if I saved one that would be one less that I could save from somewhere else.  And I would be helping a puppy mill continue to make money and treat the breeding animals terribly.

A couple years ago there was a huge puppy mill in my state that was busted.  I was sick to my stomach when I heard how these dogs were living.  The females were never let out of the feces filled cages, the males were only let out of their cages if one of the females was in heat.  The only time these dogs saw people is when food was dropped off (which wasn't often as all dogs there were underweight)or the puppies were taken away.

It may be more difficult and time-consuming to get the dog you want from a breeder or rescue, but that's a lot of time to think your decision through and learn about what you plan to do.  I decided to get my dog in summer and got one the following spring.  Unfortunately most people can't wait that long.

I was actually surprised at how easy getting a dog from the humane society is.

until we can stop the USDA from funding the mill industry....not a damn thing will be done to save the puppies or their tortured parents..

To answer the OP - Yes one in the in the early 90s. Got diabetes at 13 years old. She was 1/2 border collie and 1/2 springer spaniel cost was 50.00.

My idea (crazy as it may be) would be to make it illegal to sell animals in any pet store world wide. And anyone that breeds animals to sell whether it be a BYB - Puppymill - Responsible breeder - every year would have to have their facilities inspected. At least once a year. A surprise visit. No date set up in advance so the owners have warning of the inspection. Also have to have a license to breed so the world knows they are breeding to sell and would know where they live for the inspections. If not up to standards they are shut down. The standards could entail many things like housing, how many litters a year, vet checks ,ect

My hubby has a seed cleaning plant and some portable grain cleaners. Every year they all have to be inspected. If they are not up to code they can shut him down. He does have surprise inspections so it keeps him on his toes which is a good idea.

I'll try to answer this in as sensible a fashion without offending too many people.

What should happen to the puppies already in the system?  In a perfect world they would be homed at a very discounted price and given love and nurturing, and they would all be well behaved with no behavioral issues, no genetic faults, no parvo, no heartworm, no hip dysplasia, perfect eyes and teeth.

What do I think should happen?  These pups should be given to breed specific rescues, the "mixed breeds" should be given to no-kill shelters.

Will it happen?  No.  The amount of money in this system is too great for someone already in the business to get out.

The sad thing is that (according to what I've read online at [linkhttp://www.prisonersofgreed.org]www.prisonersofgreed.org[/link] ) is that for every single pup at the pet store, six have died.  ****Graphic site*****  Please don't visit if you cannot take graphic images

I think that the dogs currently in pet stores need to be taken to shelters and evaluated by behaviorists. The ones who aren't so mentally or physically screwed up as to be unadoptable should be put up for adoption. The rest should be humanely euthanized. And no dogs should ever be allowed for sale in pet stores. Shelters, rescues or direct from breeders only.

I've never bought a dog or cat from a pet store and neither has my family. It never even occured to me to buy from a store. The cats I had as a child came from the animal shelter. All my dogs have been from shelters. My parents three current cats are a mother and her son and daughter that my parents took in as strays (mom set up light housekeeping in their garage to have her kits), gave them vet care, spay/neuter and then adopted out to friends the kittens they couldn't keep after they were weaned. I really can't see myself ever even buying from a breeder. My needs in a dog just aren't that specific that I can't find the perfect dog for me at the shelter with a little patience and good judgement.

    This is the question.....

Who has done this "horrible" thing...what breed, and did you have any issues?

Post on topic, create another thread if you'd like to discuss the solutions

    I'll go.........
Maggie, shih tzu came from a so called puppy broker (who finally was run out of state by the state authorities after selling puppies that had parvo and died). Maggie was sold as a 8 week pekepoo (I know NOW) She was 6 weeks old MAX and is most likely a Shih Tzu. She had some seizures starting at age 3 , she had bilateral luxating patellas (one needs to be fixed AGAIN). She's great now, we finally figured out that she has intolerance to grains in her food. We love the heck out of the little brat, but I would certainly NOT go that route again
