    Stupid Collar!

If yall remember not too long ago we bought Jake a new collar bright yellow. Well we have had no problems with it until today. I about had a heart attack. Paul the dogs and I were outside as I have said before are yard isn't fenced yet so we keep Jake on a leash. Well I was picking up the water bowl to fill it and dropped it and he freaked still scared of noises. When he did he jerked back and the *%#$@!& collar came off! He was off down through the field and behind the neighbors than back up the field and finally after about 10minutes I sat down in the neighbors yard and he came upto me and just plopped down in my lap, as if to say okay I had my fun we can go home now. Needless to say the collar is going in to be thrown away and we got another collar like a buckle type to use on him. Just wondered if anyone else has had this happen with the dogs making the snap ones come undone?

Wow, I always thought the snap ones were supposed to be really tough? Guess not. Glad it turned out okay.

I refuse to use the snap collars.  Gypsy has broken several.  Heck, she's even broken a nylon choke!

I know that I will never buy one again and I will never tell anyone else to but one just because of this happening and now others syaing it's happened to them aswell.

It's happen to us before! When my brother had his puppy last year we had her outside on a leash she tugged on it and it snapped off. I was freaking out becuz of the road, bulldozer in the cementary behind our house, and the railroad track across the street since we live in town. Thanfully she came running to me and I still had Blue's old collar when he was a puppy. We never did put a snap on collar on her again.

We do have a snap on collar on Blue thankfully he doesn't pull, but I'm thinking of getting him a new collar as well. Even though Blue does have a good recall at times

I had a dog bust a snap collar before, but that was because she ran pretty fast and hard against a long line and caused it to snap. Max has never snapped his, but now i'm doubting how long that will last.

My mom's dog, Toby, broke several snap collars. He now walks on a harness:)

Boss has broken a couple of the snap ones, a buckle one, a harness, and the snap on a muzzle.

With the buckle one he broke it and it could have been ugly. I was outside in the front yard doing some gardening and had him on his tie out. He heard a man walking by and he was talking very loudly in Spanish. Boss wasn't sure what to make of it so he ran out towards the man until he reached the end of the tie out and it jerked him back. Nothing happened right then, thank God. But when he came back and sat down by me, his collar fell off still attached to the tie out. I'm so glad he didn't notice it before I did!

I use the snap collars for in the house and in the yard, but NEVER for outside walking on a lead.  The reason I use the snap collars is that they are kind of breakaway....and when one german shepherd is pulling on the collar of another german shepherd, which they LOVE to do, the collar WILL come off.  That's what I WANT in the yard!  But for walking I want the flat buckle collar, with the metal buckle that isn't going to come undone.

I use a martingale type collar on Grady just for the reason you said, Garrett.  If I'm outside with him on his tie out & he sees prey he can easily get out of ANY collar besides the martingale.  He's a pinhead.  He's getting a ton better about that & I was considering getting him a new collar.

My wife knew of relatives who owned labs that could regularly break regular chains. A welded link chain reduces that problem. Shadow has pulled out of his snap collar once, in the house. When we walk out in public, he is in a walking harness and I only have it on him for the purpose of walking. The first harness lasted a day. I left it on him at one point and in 1 minute, he had chewed and broken it off.

I too have heard of the snap ones breaking.  Luckily I have never had one break on me.  But I know my agility instructor does not like people to use them in her obedience class for that reason.  I have one snap collar which I only use during agility class as we are in a fenced area.  If I take my guys out and about, they wear thier buckle collars.

Glad Jake came back somewhat quickly!![:)]

Wow, So were we. He is still scared and definately has no good recall. I would have never thought anything like this wouls happen with the collar. I would think that they should have to put a warning on the packaging saying that their is a risk of this happening. I mean it didn't say anything so I guessed that it would have been secure. Luckily everything turned out well and I have learned a great lesson.

My mother's dog easily breaks snap collars, expensive ones or not, and our old Australian Shepherd before that did the same thing.  I do not trust any collar with plastic connectors, only metal.  I have seen metal snap collars, and I've been tempted, but so far haven't tried them.
