Exposure to the elements can cause an even break of the guard hairs - particularly if the dog was outside during the summer and is heavily coated. Poor Cord came to me after being mostly kenneled in the air conditioning, then was kenneled outside (not here, at another trainer) starting in late June. Bammo - he looked like a teenage pup growing his first "manly" hairs. It only got worse when I got him because I was feeding something he didn't like and couldn't eat well. I finally figured out his problem and now his coat is growing in again. In Feb he'll be neutered and I hope his pretty coat stays. Part of the reason I'm keeping him on the "Doggy Crack" (Royal Canin Yorkshire 30), is that it's got coat conditioners and I can tell a difference already. Yes, I'm a working BC person vehemently against conformation showing and I'm a coat snob. What can I say? I love seeing that coat rippling in the wind when they work. [

Anyway, Cord's got that same thing right now only the hair is about 1/2 inch long - it's just starting to look sort of bushy. This is in addition to the undercoat which is developing - you can tell the difference clearly on him since he's tri-factored and has a very distintive steel grey undercoat.
