Really confused on what breed is right for me.

I'm not saying to positively affirm something that shouldn't take place.  All I'm saying is that maybe if we had given her half a chance to explain in more detail rather than posting like she's an idiot and only we know about dogs maybe we could of gotten further.  Now, she probably won't return and the dog will suffer MORE instead of less because we couldn't control our emotions.

Maybe we could of explained the shedding and the exercise requirements without going on about how a breeder wouldn't let her take another dog.  What was the purpose of that??  To make her feel bad or what??  The reality is, she will be able to get another dog.  So, we should of focused on helping her in a positive way, maybe she would listen, maybe not but we made her think she wasn't a good person or owner and put her on the defensive with those comments before we even tried to find out more information or have her explain herself more.  We had valid points, I don't think a Weim is a good match based on what she posted either, but do you think after what was said she's going to listen??

I think she came with questions because she was unsure and had already felt as if she had failed.  That fact seems already established to me.  In good conscience I could not recommend an alternative breed  such as a weim as the answer.

Is she a good person?  I would never pass judgement as such.

Will she listen?  I hope so.  From the bottom of my heart.

Saradrin...I hope you post and reply what has happened to you.

willow i dont agree with you than anyone answered her like she was an idiot... i dont even think it was harsh, i just think the question was genuinly answered based on what info was there.  its unfortunate if she does not return because of it.

I think that certain things on certain boards are ALWAYS going to get hackles raised. On the horse board I belong to we had 2 members within several months (and one darn well KNEW better) post that they think that their horses had tendon injuries and were lame yet refused to call a vet and were still riding them. Yes, the fur did fly in those cases--as it should have. However, in both situations the horses got the care they needed in the end. Were feelings hurt along the way? I'm sure they were, but the horses were positively impacted and it couldn't have been TOO terrible because both people still post there. And people were not just honest, they were outright NASTY to the OPs in those threads.

Sorry, but when you come on an obviously dog-obcessed board saying that you are looking for a new dog after just dumping 2 of them in a year, and then ignoring the advise that you came in search of and announcing that you are getting a breed that is completely unsuitable for you, you are going to get a similar reaction as if you went on a horse board about an untreated, lame horse.

Willows mom, I really didn't mean to be that hard on her.....but I have a dog who was very difficult to housebreak, and I knew that going in because it is a breed characteristic. You just have to keep working on it, that's all. Housebreaking problems are not the end of the world, and if I can spend months cleaning up after a large breed dog, its hard to understand how a Chi can make such a mess that someone would get rid of her. My whole family got used to cleaning up, after a while my five year old would simply get some paper towels and clean it up on her own. My son was eight, and he cleaned up plenty of poop. I told them both that cleaning pee and poop builds character. (I don't think they believed me)

There is a miserable Weim in my neighborhood, who languishes most days on the end of a short tie out cable in a muddy corner of a lavishly landscaped yard. He is like a lawn ornament, and his owners obviously can't let him have more room because he would wreck their immaculate property. I have a soft spot for sporting breeds, and I suspect the OP won't have the patience for one, thus my reaction.

Also I am a grouchy Yankee, slowly becoming a curmudgeon due to the crummy New England weather, so I tend to be blunt.

    Update

Katrina and my whole family are doing wonderful. I am so happy I trusted my gut instinct and got the breed I was thinking about getting for a couple years now, but couldnt because of the duplex I was living in. We've had her for a few days now, and this is definately the dog I was hoping for. She's so smart and very affectionate. Thank you Willow for all you helpful and encouraging advice, not to mention the people who wrote me emails telling me about the breed and encouraging me to get the breed I felt was the best for my lifestyle.
    --Saradrin, one happy owner
Ps, I did get an older dog. She's 6 months old, thanks for everyone who suggested that. Puppyhood wasnt my cup of tea.

So you got a blue dobe.  I respectfully suggest that to keep the current feeling of happiness etc. get in obedience classes right now and get that dog a job.  Obedience, agility, rally, something.  Lest you think I am over reacting,  I have owned dobes for 20+ years and they are a handful.  Keeping them active and socialized makes for a good partnership and a high quality of life for both of you.

No, I got my weim. She's a blue fawn. Yes, akc registered, with papers. ;)
    • Gold Top Dog
I stand corrected.  I thought I saw two color variations.  Although I still suggest she needs that job [;)].  Best wishes

Mrv, I see a dobe, also. I see two color variations. Maybe the Weim isn't the dog in the picture?

Just wanted you to know you are not crazy.........
    • Gold Top Dog
I thought and have read that there is only one color of Weim.  Am I correct?[&:]
    • Gold Top Dog
Nope, theres-- Silvers, Greys, Blues, Fawn, Silver/fawn, Grey/fawn, and Blue/fawn. Blues are not showdogs, though. Their color isn't recognized in the showings. Yes, she does look a lot like a dobe though. She's sitting by me on the futon right now. She's very smart. She knows its okay to lay there, but not on the couches upstairs.
My name was also out yesterday and she started "growling (barking, just under her breath) and then would bark, pointing at my neighboor. I told her shhhh, so she sat down and inside of barking she would do that "growling bark" as if she thought THAT was okay. (She's a snot, lol) If I get up she gets up, if I sit down she lays down at my feet. She's such a sweetie.

Maybe it's me, but I am starting to think that this entire thread is just a put on.......once already the OP claimed that "someone else" posted in her name.

I'm no expert, but the dog in the picture is clearly not a Weim, so maybe someone is just having a little fun with us............
    • Gold Top Dog
That's interesting. She is a beauty, Saradrin.
AKC recognizes blue, silver and blue silver, so blue fawn is definitely new to me! That's very interesting.

She may not be able to be shown, but that's okay- those are the best pups!

    Congrats and good luck!
