OT - Four Bettas over Rainbow Bridge - help!

Well, Mr. Fishy #4 just bit the dust and I don't know why! We kept one alive for almost two years, and then we've not been able to keep one alive any longer than three days! Poor PJ, whose pet this is and who really loves his Mr. Fishy, is just about beside himself. These are lovely blue bettas, and we keep Mr. Fishy in a one gallon tank in the bedroom.

Mr. Fishy #1 died when I brought a plant in and didn't clean it properly. OK, big mistake. Mr. Fishy #2 I think died of whatever killed Mr. Fishy #1 as I didn't sterilize everything properly. Mr. Fishy #3 just keeled over literally overnight, even though I even purchased all new stuff for him. He came from Petco and never did do well really. Mr. Fishy #4 came from a place that seemed to know what they were doing - they had the bettas in habitats instead of plastic cups, nice and clean, and Mr. Fishy #4 was an outstanding specimen. I'm just so aggravated that he only lasted three days! They had a 24 hour guarantee on him, of course - all the fish places did and all the fish died right outside the guarantee time. [sm=sad.gif] I need a smiley for flushing money down the toilet - literally - here. [8|]

With Mr. Fishy #4 I also followed an online betta expert's advice for setting up the tank and whatnot, and he did nicely for about a day, but he never did eat a bite of the food we have here. I don't know whether that was it - maybe they were feeding some fancy live food in that store? Or maybe my water is too acidic - I tested it and it's pretty low - but how did Mr. Fishy #1 last so long? Nitrites and everything else are good - just the low ph water. I used Aquasol and did partial water changes every couple days. He floated, clamped his fins, then last night he turned sideways and went to join his predecessors at the watery Rainbow Bridge. Waaaaaaaaaaah.

Are there any betta experts here?

I know I can't keep anything alive in 'tap' water here -- I gave up and started using bottle water for fish ages ago.  There could simply be something your filter can't touch.  Could be something that is now coming out of your own pipes in the house (which was my conclusion there and we haven't drunk tap water in years).  My sympathies -- David and I had one for almost 2 years and we took the darned thing on vacation and everything!!  Even the dogs missed him when he was gone.

I second the bottledwater suggestion.  A few years ago I lost 4 Bettas in as many weeks.  I wasn't doing anything different with their bowls then I'd been doing for years.  Once I switched to bottled water I stopped losing them.

brookcove, sorry about your bettas. I have had bettas and currently have one betta in a 5-gallon tank and also have a 30-gallon tank with other types of fish. My current betta, Felix, is new. I just got him about 2 mos. ago. That was after my previous betta died for no reason. I had a snail in there with him and within 24 hours, the snail and the betta died. I took a sample of the water to this aquarium store and it tested fine. The guy said sometimes, there will be spikes in ammonia in the water which kills bettas very fast since they also need to breathe air. Don't know how it happened but it can be very devastating. Important thing is to do weekly water changes of about 25 to 50 percent. I currently do two changes a week, each about 25%. So far so good. Do you frequently change the water?

Yes, we do complete water changes once a week - or did on Mr. Fishy #1 - but of course with no one living longer than three days and sometimes no longer than 36 hours, we never got to that point! I did do emergency water changes when I saw a problem the last couple times, but I wonder whether that just caused more stress. We took a whole day to acclimate Mr. Fishy #4 and he only enjoyed his new tank for abut 24 hours. [sm=sad.gif][sm=sad.gif][sm=sad.gif]

I'm going to get Mr. Fishy #5 from the same store as Mr. Fishy #4 - he was just beautiful and had a great personality, and the rest of the fish were just as nice. Maybe they can help with some suggestions, too.

I wonder about the water because we're on a well and all this craziness did seem to coincide with the change in seasons, when the water table drastically rises.

I agree with the bottled water suggestions. We have city water, but it is from a well and even though they treat it there are still nitrate spikes. We ended up buying a reverse osmosis water filter when we kept a large tank of fish. There are special additives you can buy to add to RO water.

How long do you let your water set before you put it in the tank for changes? We wait several days, not just the recommended 24 hours.
