Yes, from what people have told me, male/female pairs tend to work better than the other combinations.  We have a male, so we're going to have to get a female.

where do you live? Shelters here always have beagles. Poor little critters...there are always so many of them they have a tough time getting adopted.

We had 3 females... all coming into our family at different times.  Kayla is now at the Bridge and we recently added Bailey whos a female to the other two females.... all is great.  I, due to my personal experiences, think it would be just fine if you got another female. 

That's true about the female/female combo.  I've just heard that male/male combos rarely work.  When we talked to the breeder about getting another dog from her, she told us that we would need to get a female since two males rarely work.

My two girls were terribly difficult to incorporate. There were a couple of very serious fights (blood slinging, teeth flashing, VERY noisy fights), and they still get stiff around each other, at times. It took A LOT of work to get them to be ok with each other.

Of course, they're not very laid back dogs. Beagles tend to do well in a pack setting (they're bred to hunt in packs, after all!) and would be much more likely to be ok with each other than a pair of terrier bitches (I know doxies are hounds, but I don't understand why).

I know with northern breeds there is usually only one female on a team.  The females are very aggressive toward each other.  Males can get aggressive too but the females will often try to actually kill each other.  But I have no idea with beagles.  Good luck though.

I would head a little north and check some shelters.  This time of year there are more beagles in shelters than any other breed.  Hunting season has ended and 1000's just get dumped. 
 
Keep your eyes open for pups as well.  Sometimes males and females breed in the field, and the hunters just dump the pups at the shelters.

I have heard both sides of the story for male/female, male/male and female/female combo's.  I currently have a male/female combo but growing up we had a male/male and the rest of the animals in our family were male.  That was always just fine and no fights.  With all of our males, there were never any problems and one of them was an unaltered male among a group of neutered males, and I have come to understand that is an unusual situation.  I have a friend of mine who has a female/female combo who have gotten into more fights (and nasty ones too) than anyone else.  I think that it might have something to do with the breed, whether or not they are altered and how well they are socialized and the dominance of the individual dogs.  When we were looking for a puppy the last time, I knew that I had a dominant/wannabe dominant altered male, so we actively looked for a submissive female and we have not had any problems beyond the fact that he thinks she's a pain in the butt.....but then again, she can be!  []

Neither gender it better, its what gender works better for your dog.

Trust me, there are always beagles in shelters. I agree with everybody else on getting a male instead of a female. We had an ACD that would attack daisy when she got too close and Daisy fought back. There would have been lots of blood-shed if it weren't for Daisy's size and Sage's thick fur and nubby teeth.
