Wonder if this was a breeding project for 4-H that "went wrong"? Doesn't sound good, whatever happened.

Someone needs to explain 4-h in regards to dogs and dog breeding. I have been approached for pups for "breeding projects" and I really don't understand what that has to do with Livestock and farming? Does anyone know what that's all about?

Asking seriously...I know very little about the program.

I was in canine 4-h and all it was for me was just bringing my dog to a training class once a week.  It was nice because it was once a week socialization for the dogs that went on for years...and we worked on them with everything - agility, obedience, showmanship...  There were a couple parents involved as well and those families actually bred dogs, but they weren't cheap about it or anything.  They were all dedicated and people I really looked up to.  I don't think their breeding practices were because of 4h in any way, though maybe in other 4h clubs they actually breed dogs specifically for 4h?  Seems like a crummy reason to breed a dog [&:]

Nikki they must have some sort of thing...because like I said they ask for "puppies to raise for a 4-H breeding project"....weird...maybe they can choose from a list and dogs get picked because you don't need a farm to raise them?

Well I had to do it. I called the number. Got some info. Don`t think your going to like it.

She said that her kids are in 4-H.

But the puppies that they have are
    1 Sheltie (male)
    1-Sheltie-poo(male)
and 7 Labradoodles - 5 male (black) and 2 (red females) color wasn`t right for them she said.

They want them to find a good home that they are`nt outside all the time.

They live up north so I know its cold outside as I type as I live up north also.

Starting to sound not like a 4-H project to me but a puppy mill.

Sorry I forgot to ask the price for the puppies. Just said I had to talk to hubby about it first to get off the phone with the info that I got. We have no children in 4-H here.

[linkhttp://www.fl4-h-dog.com/what_is_dog_project.htm]http://www.fl4-h-dog.com/what_is_dog_project.htm[/link] I googled this and it seems every state has a Dog Project. Sounds like a great idea for kids

I was in 4-H with my horse, but dogs were a big thing in my county.  When we were searching for labs one of the breeders we talked to (a BYB, IMHO-didn't do health testing) gave discounts on pups for 4-Hers.

I think we forget that beyond "dog people" many people think very little of breeding a dog if it is purebred.  Even my own vet assumed that I was going to breed Jack right off the bat.
