    Snoodles

While waiting for Brett's grandma to be discharged from the hospital, I was killing time by flipping through this weekly ad paper. Aside from the 200 rabbits for sale "in time for Easter," I found this:

"Certified AKC miniature male Schnauzer born 6/30/05, weight 15 lbs., ready to mate. I would prefer a certified Poodle, black or white in color, for pick of litter. If certified Schnauzer, any color, for a fee. If mates with a Poodle, it will be a Snoodle, they are selling for $600-700. Please call..."

The last line really bothered me because it's obvious she's doing this for money. Not to mention the whole BYB issue...

Unfortunately schnoodles are not new to the designer breed world. They've been around quite awhile. There's a schnoodle breeder in my area who just upped her puppy price this year from $800 to $1000 and she always has a long waiting list and her puppies go quickly. Sadly, it's a buyers market and designer dogs are making a lot of people money, at the expense of the dogs. Just look at all the poodle-mixes and other breed mixes in your shelters and you'll see what I mean. Some are accidental breedings, but IMO most probably were not. [:(] I have nothing against the dogs...they are great dogs in most cases. It just weighs on my mind that there are SO many dogs being bred for profit nowadays when the unwanted pet population is staggering. Something is wrong with that picture. [&o]

My boyfriend's sister has a male schnoodle that her mother (not my bf's mother---it's one of those confusing families) gave them to raise so that he can breed with HER female schnoodle.

It makes me sick. Sure, the male is a cute dog. The female is a PITA, in my opinion. I am really thinking she's wanting to do this just for the money. The sister/daughter is going along with it because her kids like the pup, and because she's totally oblivious to the designer dog thing. I'm not going to start a fight about it, it's pointless. And the IRONY here?

She's a dog musher. She should KNOW better! OTOH, dog mushers do mixes all the time on purpose to strengthen their teams. So she may be thinking it's fine because of that. Arrrggghhhh.
