    Are candy canes toxic?

Marley managed to eat part of a candy cane while I was cooking dinner. I did a quick search online to see if peppermint or candy canes are harmful for dogs, but could not find anything on the usual list of "no-no's". Marley did not eat the plastic wrapper (how she managed to unwrap it is beyond me) and the candy cane was a regular sugar one. She seems fine, but can anyone think of any reason this might make her sick? Our vets office is closed for the evening, and I don't think this warrents a call to the emergency # for our vet since Marley seems okay. Dose anyone know if peppermint candy canes are toxic to dogs?

Maisie ate half of one a week ago..she was fine (she had the runs for a couple days)..and plus shes only 10 pounds! Don't worry, I think she'll be fine.

Thanks! That makes me feel much better!

Considering what "Whatshouldmyloginbe?" said (hehe), I think she'll be fine.  My brother left a chocolate chip waffle on the floor the other day, and Riley ate it!  I managed to rip the other 3rd of it from his mouth, but he seems okay.

That is something working to your advantage, their SIZE[:D].  They would need lots lots more than most to have issues.  Probably just a nice treat[:)].

ETA:  Not that it tkes away any of the worry[;)].

Candy canes aren't toxic -- could make them a big sugar high but it won't hurt them.

True story -- years ago I had this dog, Mike tha Dog.  He was a total character.  Mr. Honest -- if he liked you great.  If he didn't he'd raise his middle claw to you on his way by! and those folks he could care less about 'pleasing' too!!

My ex was bullemic (didn't binge an purge in the usual way -- he would eat and eat and then throw things away to purge - if it bugged him he'd toss it.  Military discharge papers, marriage papers, money -- anything.  Gone!! but the man could literally spend $1000 in a month just going from MacDonalds to 7-11 to Burger King to eat constantly.).

So I'd put up the Christmas tree, and I put a whole box of "Bob's" Candy Canes on as decorations (you know the regular big cello wrapped candy canes).  I got home from work on Monday and ALL those candy canes were GONE ... HISTORY .... except for one at the top.

So yeah, I admit it -- I went to the husband, totally ticked off and he exploded "I haven't TOUCHED any of your @#*@#)$& candy canes!!"

Something about how completely ticked off he got made me wonder if it truly wasn't him ... so just on a whim I went into where Mike had his 'lair' (this was years before crating -- and I just had his bed in the bottom of my closet, but he'd stash anything in there he thot he might want ... later).

Yep -- there in his 'lair' was 9 very sticky pieces of cellophane.  HOW he got all of those out of the plastic without eating it I'll never know.  But he'd swiped them off the tree one by one with his paw and carried them to his bed for a snack.  NINE  OF THEM.

He lived.  Loved candy canes for the rest of his life too.  To this day I can't look at a box of Bob's candy canes without thinking of Old Mike tha Dog!!

My husband and Babe shared Altoids. She would not move anywhere off the bed till she had 2 of them and in the last couple of years would wait by the side of the bed at bedtime for them. I honestly think they settled her stomach.

I think he will be just fine!

Regular candy canes and peppermints won't hurt your dog (except for the sugar high and possible runs! YUCK)  However - be sure to avoid 'sugar-free' types around the pets - those are the ones that can hurt and cause liver/kidney damage.

We share pieces of candy canes with Millie and Max, and they never have had a problem.

I share candy canes with mine, too. They love them!

Okay, I feel much better now, and most important Marley is fine.[:)]

Callie, it must be something about the Bob's candy canes. That is exactly what Marley ate. She did not pick her own out,  the cats helped her by dragging one off the tree, and into the family room. I still cannot believe that she pulled the wrapper off her candy cane.... little brat![8D]

I agree. From what I've read, doggy toxins are dose-dependent. A big dog requires a larger dose to exhibit symptoms, a small dog can show symptoms at a smaller dose.

Some toxins are not as drastic as others. Chocolate can cause a heart attack, while the disulfides in onion may cause hemolytic anemia. Sometimes, dogs just luck out, being the scavengers they are.

Another one I just learned about this year was raisins and grapes . . .causes kidney damage I believe.

Look at it this way, Marley prolly has some pretty sweet smelling breath now.  [:D]

Yep, and she needed to sweeten it up! Her breath has been horrible lately.[:'(] I have a self-medicating saint!
