I am seriously thinking of getting rid of my puppy

Sorry I posted this in the behaviour section too.

I am so bummed.  My puppy that is a GSD mix bit the vet today and he was just petting her.  She has always been a little on the nippy side, but lately it has been way worse.  It is like she has changed personalities or something.  Health wise she is perfect, she just want to hunt and run and fight and wrestle and it is not puppy like anymore.  Reminds of a K9 unit.

We dont know what to do. we have a trainer coming out on Monday and hope that might help but at this point we cannot even take her walking anymore, we cannot get a gentle leader, a regular leash or a choke chain on her without her drawing blood.

    HOHUM!! I hate this!!!!!

Oh I hope the trainer can help you out.  That is so sad.

Maybe Mic could use her for his police dog if it doesnt work out?

    Anyone have any advice?
Please? I don't want to get this puppy a new home.

sorry I don't have any advice
but in all honesty it would be terribly unfair of you to rehome this puppy who bites. You would have to tell another family why you are giving him up and it would be very difficult to find someone who is going to take a puppy who will bite so easily.
I hope the trainer has some help for you, perhaps you should consult a behaviorist instead

I would not just give this puppy to someone and not tell them it bites.  I think it  needs someone who has a lot more experience than I do.  I don't want to have to totally exclude it from family activities either, so I am at a loss.

I am paying for the trainer, can't afford a behaviourist too. I will try though.

This is horrible, I feel like I did something wrong for rescuing this pup from the shelter.[:(]

Don't feel like you've done something wrong by adopting this pup. Sometimes dogs come with behavorial issues that need to be altered. Working through this situation is going to take a lot of time and patience, and in this case, since you're hiring a trainer, it'll also take money. If you rehome the puppy, you're getting rid of your problem instead of fixing his. He's young and probably has a lot of potential, and you've done the right thing by having a trainer come in to give you some help. Good luck with this. I hope everything turns out okay.[sm=wink2.gif]

The last thing a police dog can be is bitey.  This is a very bad idea.

im adopting a 4 year old german shepherd mix from the shelter, i hope she is as sweet as she seems.

I agree that it would be unfair to give up on your puppy because of a biting issue. Dogs are for life....not just when its convenient. Maybe put some time and patience in this and things will work out.

Please let me know what your trainer says. This is a very workable problem with the right guidance!

I don't know much, but it sure seems like if this is a puppy, something can be done without getting rid of it. That is way too sad!

I'm going to be flat out honest, here, and I'm probably going to get in trouble.

If you aren't willing to deal with this problem, yourself, you need to take the dog to be PTS. It is *NOT* someone else's responsibility to deal with, and it would be WRONG to pawn her off on a rescue or shelter to do what you need to do.

I am not advocating that the dog die, but you have to be responsible for your own animals. Yes, I've been in the situation. It was the hardest thing I've ever done. Emma was *IN* the vet's office to be euthanized. She came within 10 minutes of the needle. I had a full CBC run, to be sure there was nothing that could be done, medically, and there was something seriously wrong. She's 99% better, now. She does still bite, but she's manageable.

This puppy doesn't sound like she's horrible. She really does sound workable. You need a behaviorist, more than a trainer, IMO.

I would exhaust all efforts possible and borrow money for training long before this puppy would be put to sleep.

I KNOW animals are for life, but so are my children, we are not talking about a LITTLE problem and I truly resent being spoken to as if I am stupid and did not make an informed decision.

I have had dogs before and I have another one now that is 3 yrs old also a rescue, and he is great.

I am sorry I ever wrote this message in this forum.
Mic thanks I will talk to the trainer and see what she says about it.
    Glenda thanks for emailing me.
To the rest of you thanks for the kind words and know that I am TRYING!! Just hard and frustrating and I am tired of my whole family bleeding and with bandages in trying to deal with this puppy.
