The presence of a male won't do anything, but the presence of another unaltered female can cause cycle changes, though typically not so quickly. From being around the other female and smelling her pheremones, the two dogs' cycles begin to assimilate. This can happen with female humans that live in the same household or work in the same area as well. It seems to happen over the period of a few cycles, though, and dogs being diestrus (spelling?) they come into heat twice a year, typically once every six months.
