    AKC VS CKC

Why would  a dog be both? Is one better than the other group? Any help understanding this would be appreciated.

That depends on which CKC you're talking about. There's the Canadian Kennel Club which is the Canadian version of the AKC and there's the Continental Kennel Club whose registration isn't worth the paper it's printed on. You can learn more about kennel clubs by clicking [linkhttp://www.wonderpuppy.net/kc.htm]here[/link].

A dog can be registered with multiple organizations.  Many registries recognize each other.  CKC  when it is not the Canadian Kennel Club is a pay your money, get some papers organization. There is no pedigree information required or monitored.  AKC UKC registrations are fairly common.  You will also see foreign registries (France, UK, Norway, Mexico, etc) for imported dogs being recognized by AKC UKC.

Dogs can be registered with multiple orgs.  An AKC/UKC registration would allow the person to show their dog in events from both organizations.  Registrations from international orgs (CanKC, FCI, etc.) allow the person to show the dog in events held in the country of the org.  That's why when you look in magazines that contain show dog advertisements, you'll sometimes see dogs that have Championships from Mexico, Canada, Europe, etc. as well as from the States.
