    shelters

it should be a law that no dogs or cats can be sold in any pet shop anywhere or by breeders until the shelter populations are under control.

in a perfect world it could happen but as long as people are willing to part with their $$ to buy that cute little puppy in the store it'll never happen.
Responsible breeders though can stay - BYBers and puppy millers should go.
But we need people who continue to breed dogs to enhance a breed - or even for service dogs.
And I know responsible breeders for Siamese cats who do a lot of work for Siamese Rescue.
A good rule would be for breeders (responsible ones) to not only let their dogs breed but also be willing to assist in rescues .... and many do

I agree that pet shops shouldn't be selling them, but I think a lot of folks would disagree about the breeders.  Some breeders are very responsible and make a lifetime commitment to the puppies they raise.  If you are referring to byb's and puppy millers, then I'm with you on that one.

i think no one should sell them period, not even responsible breeders, until the shelters are under control, i dont think it would take very long if all the people who were going to buy puppies at a store wound up buying them from a shelter or rescue home.  after that, only responsible breeders should be able to sell them but it would have to really be enforced.  and yeah, im talking about a perfect world cause in this world it wouldnt be enforced.

Jaye, I know where you're coming from.  Wouldn't that be nice if everyone looking for a puppy was directed to the shelter until they all had homes?  In a perfect world, yes.  But since it wouldn't happen that way, and it would take so long to accomplish, I think we'd have really great lines of dogs dying out from not being bred, and possibly some breeds all together.  That would be awful.

It would be nice but on the other hand, if it were enforced would the shelter dogs get good homes.  If someone really wanted a purebred GSD or a showline Great Pyrenese, but was forced instead to get a dog from a shelter that had no papers at all, do you think it would be treated nicely?  I could definately see fake adoptions just so that these dogs could be disposed of and the breeders could take over again.  Especially the BYB's.

Now if we could somehow regulate breeding to dogs that have some sort of title behind them.  Say service dogs or obviously champion show dogs, great working lines and charge accordingly then maybe some things could change.  All other dogs would have to be altered, and or put on birth control until they were proven.  I don't limit it to champion show dogs and the best of the breed because of my breed.  I won't run a team of purebred sibes.  Its just not an optimal team for me.  I want the speed of a husky rather than a malamute but I need the size of a northern because of wolves.  And a northern husky is not a true breed.  But I will never breed a less than great sled dog.  Also any dog that did breed would need all appropriate health tests for thier breed.  So if idog ruled the world...
