What is your favorite size of dog?

There are things I like about all sizes, but I would have to say medium/large is my favorite...like cattle dog size. I have a burning place in my heart for a Dane or Irish Wolfhound, but because of their short life span will probably never have one. My dog Dooley is 21" at the shoulder and 45 pounds..I think he fits my ideal pretty well.

I like medium, sometimes large. The giants don't live long enough, but then again none of them do [&o].

I always thought I peferred small dogs (small being the size of a cocker spaniel) because that's the size I always had.  Now I have Max who I suppose is considered big (61 lbs.) but he really doesn't seem all that big to me - except when he's using my feet for his pillow. I guess for me size isn't nearly as important as personality and temperment.

    yes.

    LOL I agree!

When I adopt a dog I don't take size into consideration... just whatever feels "right", ya know?
That said if I were ever to buy a dog I would get a large dog. I love big dogs! I'm not exactly sure what is considered "giant"... Dante was 27" and 150lbs at his heaviest, 115 when he died. Everyone said he was "huge", but he didn't seem all that big to me... I guess I was just used to him LOL

I prefer medium to very large.  I'd be looking into a Mastiff but DH has this dumb rule about dogs not out-weighing him...

I prefer large dogs, mostly because they tend to have deeper barks than smaller dogs (I am very sensitive to high pitched noises--this is why I'm so hesitant about ever being around small children).

Additionally, I prefer having larger dogs because I'm a single female living by myself and it makes me feel safer (did I mention I'm a highly paranoi.d individual?).  I know size doesn't always correspond to guard/defense ability, but it's a psychological thing.  I know that many little dogs would be more defensive of me than my goofball 55-60 pound poodle mix, but I feel safer sleeping next to him than I do my dad's border collie/beagle mix... and I think walking with him at night tends to scare off more people who would consider doing me harm than a smaller dog would.

This could also be why I'm attracted to guys who are about twice my size... ;)

My favorites are the "giants" and larger breeds and I probably wouldn't go smaller than medium unless a place I lived had a weight requirement or something.  Growing up we always had small to medium sized dogs and as an adult I have only owned larger breeds and for whatever reason these guys are my preference...

I prefer the giants or large breeds.  It's all I've lived with, so that's what I'm comfortable with.  However, I do like all dogs and if a stray Chihuahua showed up here tonight, I'd take him in and give him a home!  And then pray I don't step on him![sm=rofl.gif]

    yes.

i will say that i like all sizes of dogs. we talked about getting a min pin before we adopted amelia. i like dogs that are able to go on long hikes though, so realistically i dont think most small dogs would fit with that. also, sydney is very rambuctious (sp?) so i would be afraid that right now a small dog might have a tendency to get easily injured in our house unless it was a sturdy dog like maybe a beagle.

medium to smaller large dogs seem to fit our house and lifestyle at the moment. amelia is about 50 lbs and sydney is about 70 lbs. i like a lot of the hunting dog breeds too and most seem to be in the 30-60 lb range.

i love a some of the larger breeds (great danes and greyhounds specifically). i could definitely see one of those dogs in our future especially if we were to get a larger house.

all that said, i think the most important thing is the dog's personality. if the dog has a personality that is compatible with us and our other pets, i would consider adopting him/her if we were looking for a dog.

I'd have to say that I am partial to large - giant dogs.  I can recognize the convenience of a small dog but I've not really met one with the personality I have gotten from the bigger dogs.  In general I find them quieter ( I can't stand barkers), sillier, more easy going, less fussy and I just **generalization forthwith** prefer the temperament.  As others have said I also like that they are seemingly 'less fragile'

YOU stepping on him?!  What about those dogs you already own?

I also prefer large dogs. I'm a recent convert. I always had toy breed dogs as a kid, Yorkie, Maltese, etc. and Stanley's my first "big dog" at 70 lb. And I love it! I can brush him like I brush a horse and he doesn't wince if I pull hair. He can bump his head on a hydrant & will shake it off. I can roughhouse with him and can "slap-pet" him.

Gee, I guess DH needs to gain some weight! [:D]

I like all dogs, regardless of size. For my household, a medium/large size works best FOR NOW.  In the future, I suspect I will have smaller dogs (when I am not strong enough to handle an Am Staff at the teenage stage!).

I get a kick out of the little dogs we have at the shelter.  They always have such a zest for life. Life seems to be one big party as far as they are concerned!
