    Luxating Patella

Well, Nikki has been diagnosed with Luxating Patellas.  Thankfully it's not a terribly case of it, as far as they can tell from the physical exam.

She doesn't exhibit any of the symptoms (other than I've noticed I can occaisionally feel her leg "pop" when I'm holding her) no limping nor does she appear to be in pain.

She is a VERY active little dog (JRT/Chihuahua mix) and looooves to run and play.  The vet said to try to keep her from jumping and sprinting (I may as well try to teach her algebra as to do that.)  So, I'll do my best, but I wanted to get any advice from you that you may have experienced in dealing with this.

FYI she's gonna be 2 very soon and weighs about 10-11lbs.

    Thanks in advance!!

    Hi.
We have a Pom and like most poms he also has luxating patellas.  The only thing that we are super cautious about is him jumping from really high areas like out of the car and things like that.
Our vet said that basically its like when a person has bad knees more often then not they regret having the surgery and feel worse after...if it doesn't effect them just keep an eye on it.
    Good luck!

I know how you feel.  I have two dogs with luxating patellas but so far they don't need surgery.  We try to keep them from jumping, turning sharp corners, slipping, etc. and hope it stays stage 1  :)

We used to have a dog that had luxated patellas, and they think she was born with it or developed it early, but when we had the Vet examine her they said that we could go with surgery (which was quite exspensive) or just work with it as it was, and that's what we did. It was in both of her back legs. She always limped some, but other than that it didn't seem to affect her a whole lot. Hopefully yours is a better case(doesn't require surgery, I mean). Good luck with it.

Willow has it, both legs, Stage I and has been for three years now.  But, it is a good idea to limit the jumping.  And, I've been giving a hip and joint supplement since I found out about it.  Willow sometimes stands funny when one or both are out of place a little.  Then she will stretch her legs and adjust it herself.  In fact, in my signature picture you can see she's standing with her back legs turned in a little.  That's one sign she's out of place.
