How big is your dog and how long are the strings? They probably won't hurt him if it's just a few short ones, but the long ones can get twisted up with his intestines. The vet clinic my sister worked at had a Golden Retriever pup eat a bunch of string from a rope bone and the poor little guy died even after surgery to remove it. I think in that case, the problem was due to the large amount of string in the small amount of pup.
I'm not much of a worry-wart myself. Especially with adult dogs. Our Dal has passed some of the most unbelievable things. Wooden spoons, filet mignon - complete with toothpicks, several feet of rope edging from a comforter, corn cobs, bones of every size and type, and too many McDonalds toys to count. So far, no obstructions or perforations, but the occasional bout of colitis is probably due to all of the gastrointestinal abuse.
