Would you PAY to enter a dog park?

Would you PAY to enter a dog park?

Yes or no...say $25 per month?

There are no real special things...just free fenced space and a walking trail...the usual dog park stuff. It s contained within a public park maintained by the city. There was some issue getting the park started and this fee is being used to make sure it happens...the dangling carrot so to speak. They will issue keycards or something when you pay otherwise the gate will be locked.

Since I only frequent a DP maybe twice a year, I wouldn't. However, if it were a more integral part of my dog management, I probably would. If it was a yearly membership fee, say $25-50 a year, I probably would, and then go somewhat more often.

Only if there weren't any other good, free dog parks around. In my current situation, definitely not. But if it was the only park around, I'd gladly do it. I would be concerned about access for lower income dog owners, though.

There is a dog park about 45 minutes away that charges $10 per year in membership and it's on the honour system. The only reason I'd pay that is the fact that they have an agility course.

    Yes, IF it was:

    1. Well maintained (pooper scooper rule but someone also policed it to pick up missed deposits)

    2. Big- larger than the one by the tollway

    3. Had something that the other dallas parks don't- agility equipment and/or a pond. (I'd rather have the agility eq)

    4. Limited subscriptions to a certain number to keep it from getting overcrowded.

    5. Had lights so it could be used after dark on winter evenings.

I think if I were living in the US again i'd pay for it. When I was a kid I used to take our cockapoo to the local park (yes the agressive one, he actually played good with other doggies) and there were tons of people who wouldnt pick up after there dogs, they had agressive dogs and they didnt carew when they bullied and ganged up on the other dogs. I think with a paying park people would actually be more responsible?

Maybe the not so responsible people would say 'why the heck am I going to pay when theres a free park down the block'

I would pay, but how much would depend on what other options were available, how nice the park was and whether the other people there sucked or not. Private fee-based dog parks really aren't that unusual and if the closest one to me was nice and had a reasonable fee, I'd definatley consider it. The dog park we go to is part of a city park and is free, but also has some not-so-great features (though a group that I'm part of is trying to wade through the beaurocracy to get those fixed) and if there was another, equally close, that was nicer, I'd certainly pay. $25/month sounds a bit on the steep side, but if there were no other options, I'd pay it.

I mean, what would this money be put towards? I can understand if it's private property and if a rent/mortgage needs to be paid, but in a city park I don't understand what the fee would be used to pay for aside from just grass-cutting and general maintence.

If that was my only (or even most) convenient off-leash option, yes, I'd pay.

I haven't been to a dog park in about 8 years but went frequently when I lived in the Washington DC area.  I would definitely have paid that much back then when it was the main exercise my dog got.

How about $100 with no price break if it's purchased midyear?! Thats how the DP here is structured and it sucks! I got sooo spoiled this summer in Arlington, VA where their parks are all free and were w/in walking distance.

Needless to say, as a college student I don't have the funds to spend $100/9 months for dog park access.[:(] I think that's actually the point unfortunately - the board won't even allow the campus dog club to subsidize memberships for it's members yet they allow the humane society to bring dogs in twice a week that haven't had rabies vaccines. [:'(]

    I don't think I would/will pay.

It is a city park...the entire rest of the park is free. Fundraising was done to fund the park and it was passed by the city council to build it...IMO that means the city is reponsible for it. I live in the city and shop there and my taxes go to the city already at this point. Being a resident...I do not think it should be an issue of paying to use.

I also do not like that, thru collecting money and issuing keycards, they will know this way who has what dogs and possibly their breed, within their city. That is for other reasons entirely tho [;)] But (not being overly paranoid, lol)...I believe all bully/maligned breed owners should be wary of giving info like this to their city for ANY reason.

You know Gina, the more I think of it the more I think "WTF?"

Though we just had a meeting of our local dog-park-improvement group and basically if we want to improve the park, we have to do the fundraising and pay for everything and then once we've done that we have to turn around and kiss the hineys of every single person in the parks department to please to allow us to please pretty please pay out of our own pockets to improve a publicly owned facility, please pretty please with sugar on top. And they might let us do it.  It's ridiculous.

However, our city is currently in receivership and I want a nice, fenced, well-maintained dog park for the pups, you gotta do what you gotta do I guess.

We belong to a "Pay-to-Play-Park". There are a couple of different membership levels. Access is by key card through 1 main gate or the clubhouse. We have a "gold" membership and for roughly 30.00 a month we have unlimited use of the park from 7a-9p, 7 days a week incl. Holidays. The park is about 20 acres, divided into 4 yards with gates, completely fenced. There are water stations, poop pickup bags and disposal bins in each area. The park also has a pond which is open from April-October. The clubhouse includes self-service dog wash stations as well as grooming by appointment. The park is staffed 6 days a week. Current vaccines, and stool sample checks are a requirement. All the dogs are subjected to a temperament test before being allowed to join.

When we first joined, I have to admit, I felt a little silly paying to go to a park but......after being members for 1.5 years, its worth every dime. For me its worth the $$ to not have to worry about my dog being off leash in a safe environment, plus he comes home tired!

I would pay $25 to $30 a month for what Mookie's Mom describes.  On the other hand, I would pay $40 a year for a fenced in park with water stations where owners picked up after their dogs and that was about it.    but yeah Gina, from the stand point of what type of breed, what does it matter other than it's vaccinated and a dog?!

I would pay.  We have nowhere to let them loose.  I mean ... I could go to a field - but I worry that one day the recall won't be there ... It just scares me.

I think if I were paying though - that there would have to be some sort of code of ethics involved.  There's an unofficial off-leash area in town and Westley was beat up several times by the same dog who's owner didn't feel his dog had a problem. (He would arrive after I was there and couldn't call off his dog.)  So we can't go there because this guy is a jerk.

I would definitely like to have somewhere to go though...especially fenced.

I would pay about $10/mo if I had the need for a park, and it had amenities - drinking water, poop bags, seating for humans, a pond or beach. I think even with amenities $25/mo ($300/yr) is a little too much. I think the temperament testing idea is both appealing and problematic at the same time... if a park offered that, though, I might be more likely to go. For Russell I've decided it's too stressful and not enough fun.
