Wire crate recommendations?

    Wire crate recommendations?

We've always had plastic crates, and for this next one I want wire. He isn't tough on his crates, doesn't chew or try to break out - so a bargain line will work fine for us.

I wish the ones on sale at dog.com were in stock, but I need one before they are going to have them. What do you guys think of Midwest? Is there any difference in the [linkhttp://www.dog.com/search.asp?SKW=SADROP&Category=Dog%20Crates]Full-Feature Home Training Crate and the Starter Home Training Crate[/link]? They're the same price.

Any other (cheap) recommendations for a large size?

I love my Precision fold down wire crates. I would not use one to crate train an unsupervised dog, but my dogs are all crate trained and actually like their crates. We basically only use them for traveling and tournaments now. I also have a Midwest wire crate with double doors..I love the versatility the double doors offers! Makes it easier to arrange in tight spaces...like a vehicle. It is the one I grab the most often. I can't comment on prices..it's been a while since I bought one..and when I did I got them at cost because of where I work.

This is the Midwest one that I have.

I love my Precision fold down wire crates.

We use this one too (the biggest one they carry) and they are great.  I also love the ex- pens this company carries...we have 2 of them with the wire "lid".

Try calling your local walmart........ I don't like them either or what walmart stands for, but we were unsure of how the crate thing would work out so we went cheap. got a wire one for about $40 that would fit a dog bigger than Sammy (we went a size up since we dont use it for housetraining - he's about 45 lbs).  So this was probably good for maybe 50-60 lbs depending on how tall the dog is.  They also had one size up from that.

Of course, he didn't like the wire one but prefers plastic, so we have a somewhat bent one with some zip ties on it just collecting dust now..... so it was a $40 container to keep sammy from his toys/treats that we now store in there [:)

Actually, see if you have a local freecycle - I see wire crates on there all the time, and it's the best price ever - Free!  Most tend to be in good condition from what I understand.

The only site I would probably buy a dog crate from is [linkhttp://www.jbpet.com]www.jbpet.com[/link] since they dont charge extra for oversize shipping.  I've had great luck with them in the past.

I bought a wire one for Rose at Wal-mart and its just fine for her.  Then, I bought a huge plastic one so I could put Rose and Colton together and they could play a bit while I was in class.  They were both already crate trained so housebreaking wasn't the purpose.  Although, Rose is a bit stupid sometimes when it comes to messing her crate.  But, anyway, the wire one worked for a bit for both of them, but then they figured out how to push the plastic tray out, and move the crate across the room...don't ask how...the lady at Wal-Mart would not believe me and kept trying to talk me into another wire one.  They did it though...thats two Russels for you!  Also, Colton likes to pull anything within reach into his wire crate.  He has to be in the plastic one, or there has to be a couple of feet of clearance all the way around the wire crate!

I've gotten a couple of VERY inexpensive wire crates on ebay and they've held up just fine.

Sammy did the same exact thing!!  Hence why we had tried zip tying the little door to the tray shut, but that didn't work since he then  chewed the zipties off.  We use a plastic crate now.

We bought our wire crate at Pet Supplies Plus. It's made by Life Stages, and is also a fold-down. We loved it!

Picturing two JRT slipping the tray out and moving their crate around the room to get at what they want ..cracks me up! I'd love a video tape of them trying to get it through a doorway.

    we have one of these....

their prices were great. the crate has held up well too. we also have a midwest lifestages with 2 doors. it is a good crate as well just more expensive than the digit pet one. i would definitely buy another one from digit pet.

btw: both our crates are the folding version.

edit: the two crates in your link look identical. not sure what the  difference is. we also have a midwest drop pin crate. it has held up well. still in good shape too. only reason we upgraded, sydney out grew it. the digit crate we bought it a 48" crate. the midwest crates we have are both 42".

Not cheap, but safe and last a long, long time.

You can find them on ebay sometimes too.  Just be sure to get the ones with the smaller grid.

Crates must be selling like crazy right now - most everywhere online is sold out of the largest sizes. But thanks for the suggestions everybody! You've given me some good ideas, and some good places to look.
