    Breeder or Shelter

Where and how did you get your dog?  From a shelter, breeder, a gift?

Shelter - she was found as a stray at 3 months old, and scheduled to be PTS by the pound. This pound generally euthanizes any large breed dogs and/or puppies regardless of temperament.

A rescue org picked her up and fostered her, and we found her on Petfinder.

Riley was given to me by my aunt because she already had several dogs, and she could not care for him anymore.  He would have been put to sleep otherwise.  I thought he was a mutt, though.  I didn't know that there was such a breed as a Cairn Terrier.

    shelter.
I will never buy from a breeder as long as my beloved APBTs are over-populating shelters across the country.

    Maska - shelter
    Sioux - shelter
Fergie - rehomed to us after her owner's death
    Sequoyah - breeder

I have no problem with buying a registrable dog from a breeder for performance, work, or showing.  But, I think if you buy or breed, you should also rescue!

All shelter. Two from a municiple pound (Ananda and Conrad) and Marlowe's from a shelter.

Frankly, it never really occured to me to buy from a breeder. I just figured that I'd visit the pounds and shelters until I met my new best friend. I don't need a dog for working or showing, so I will always rescue.

All shelter for us as well. Loki and our cat came from Animal Control, and we adopted Julius from the SPCA. I will always adopt from shelters.

Dasher - breeder (I was looking for my next agility dog so I had specific criteria I was looking for)

Lille - SO got from a friend (many years ago before he met me)

Cats (Freddie and Rocky) - strays. Freddie was a barn kitty needing a home, Rocky was on my back porch on very cold Feb. night.

We adopted C from my boyfriend's dad when he was 5 months old.  His dad had bought a GSP and RR puppy from breeders to go hunting with him.  After a few months he realized that the two of them were too much work (duh!) and he offered C to my boyfriend and I.  We weren't really planning on getting a dog then but I had fallen in love with C.

I'm not sure what would have happened to C if we didn't adopt him :-(

Never once in my life have I ever gotten a dog from a breeder.  The only two purebreeds I've ever had were Muffin the Intrepid and Billy the 'Venturer -- both English cockers, and Muffin was a placement that went bad (a friend of mine who does rescue) because his skin was bad, and Billy we thought was deaf from ear infections (his ears were swelled completely shut).  Even the three I've gottent thru Petfinder, I've twice looked for handicapped dogs or dogs with problems we could help.

Otherwise either a shelter, or very often street strays that I pulled off the street myself and licensed.  Wouldn't do it any other way.

Bandit came from a back yard breeder--purchased by an ex-boyfriend of my daughter and rehomed with us at age 5 months when the ex BF lost interest.

Smokey came from the shelter.  We were his 4th home in two years. He has some separation anxiety (wonder why??)

Cinnamon came from a breeder in Okinawa--purchased by my son, and rehomed with us after she was bred over there.  I have no idea about the responsibility level of the breeder.  I didn't know she was pregnant when she arrived here. My son was rather young and irresponsible.

Kuma, Minky, and Dango--the pups of Cinnamon, born in my house.  We found suitable homes for 4 of the pups, but I was so picky that we ended up keeping 3 of them.  I would rather keep them than have them go to homes that aren't able to care for such a unfamiliar breed.

We've got two cats that were strays.

We adopted Charlie (female Lab) from the Humane Society.

My adult kids loved Charlie so much, they got:
Jada (lab / border collie mix)
    Spuds (Pit Bull)
    Sweet Pea (Pit Bull)
    Missy (????)

And, we got the second Lab, Cassie.

By my count, that makes 5 dogs rescued because of Charlie!
