Bleeding gums?

Our pomeranian has been sick since we got him on Wednesday.  He's on an antibotic now from the vet and seems to be feeling better; today is the first day he's accepted any type of treat from me or rawhide chew toys.  However, I noticed on two different pieces of rawhide that there were red stains on them like blood.  The vet just examined his teeth yesterday when we picked up the antibotic so they must have looked ok.  All of his teeth are there, there don't seem to be any missing.

He's only 2 years old, but the vet mentioned that poms have problems with their teeth.  Is this bleeding anything to be concerned about?  I read that poms need dry food to keep their teeth in good shape.  Are these rawhide chews a good idea, even though they make his gums bleed?
