Ace's tag has his name on the front, and on the back is my name and contact information (address, cell and home numbers).  He also has a muni license tag, rabies tag, and mircochip tag.

"REWARD" is a good idea. I hadn't thought of that.

Emma's says her name, my cell, and "NEEDS MEDICATION: DO NOT FEED" on it.

If someone fed her, she could become very, very ill.

I would put his name, possibly a phone number and your Vet's name on the tag.

Has anyone ever seen the color and shrink tags?  I forget what they are called but they are a plastic sheet you color, write the info you want on it , cut it out and then put it in the oven and it shrinks into a smaller hard plastic tag.  I#%92ve seen then on a few animals but I don't know where to get them from.  Anyone know what I'm talking about?  I really want to get one of thoes for Giz.

I think "Reward" is a great idea to put on the tag, never thought of that.

Xebby, I have a horrible story about those tags. My friend's dog got loose on a hike, and when somebody found the dog they could not call her because the number wasn't readable from the shrunk tag. So they took the dog home that night and then were going to take it to the shelter/look for the owner by posting flyers at the hiking spot.

The dog was VERY attached to my friend and climbed out of their yard and got hit by a car, and the police only found her to tell her from the partial address and name.

    So PLEASE don't get one!

Oh!  Was it because the letters rubbed off or it just wasn't legible in the first place?

I found some shrink paper online that you can print on from you home printer, I wonder if it is more legible if it would or if it rubs off to easily with wear.  I#%92m so tempted to try it but if it#%92s going to be a problem I might avoid it all together and save my money for something better.  The ones I saw were just so cute and colorful but if it#%92s not worth it…

I think it was a combination of size and font.

I would recommend you get a good expensive engraved riveted-on tag with the bare essentials (your phone number and your vet's phone number) and put them on a high-quality sturdy collar you don't ever attach a leash to (don't want your dog backing out of his collar and running off anonymous). I've had very bad luck with the hanging tags- they always seem to rub and become unreadable, or break off. Since I frequently find broken-off tags lying around I suspect I'm not the only one.

Agreed mudpuppy..I never use the collar my dogs wear all the time to take them for a walk. They have tons of choices when it comes to walk wear..I have slip leads and some leashes with martingale collars attached that I use the most.

One of my dogs is microchipped with 24 HR petwatch and Avid. She came with the first chip and I had her chipped again with an Avid chip. Check to make sure 24 hour pet watch is still in operation..I was told they are NOT, but haven't checked it out since I depend on the Avid chips.

Cassidy has her Rabies tag on her collar ( two actually, 2005 and 2006) and an ID tag. Hers says her name, my name, our address, and our phone number. It doesn't have a cell phone, though. These tags are on her collar that has her name and our phone number stitched on it. So if the tag comes off, and she has the collar, they could still call us. Another collar I recently got for her is leather and a brass engraved namplate says her name, and our phone number, plus the cell #. I don't have any tags on this collar, though.

Mirelle has her Rabies, a GetMeHome tag, where's she's registered online, and a Canine Companions ID tag. Her collar only has her name stitched on it (only for personal use, I guess). So none of her tags says directly where to call, or to go, but the Canine Companions tag has their phone number and her ID number, so if someone calls them, they'll be able to tell them all of my information. The GetMeHome tag is basically the same thing, except my info is registered on a website. That one was free, so I just put it on for extra security.

ETA: Neither of them is microchipped, but Mirelle does have an ear tattoo given to her by the service dog organization before she came to me.

My boys used to wear several tags and they'd drive me crazy clanking together, so I tried securing them with a rubberband, but eventually it wore out. Then one day I found a dog roaming the neighborhood and all he had was the license tag. I had to call the shelter to get the owner's number, called and left a message with them, then brought the dog home and kept him in my backyard until they got home from work.

After that experience I had purchased inexpensive plastic tags in the shape of a bone, but I didn't care for the quality. I recently found Red Dingo tags who carry a variety of designs and color options. I won't even provide a web link as I'm not advertising for them. I ordered it from a local pet store and got it just 3 days later. I have Tonka's name, street address,  cell phone number, and the city. The printing is great and the tag looks really nice against Tonka's black fur.

Keep in mind the size of the tag, and the more info you add, the smaller the print. Here's a photo of Tonka's new tag.

I order my crew's tags from Boomerang tags. The plastic ones are durable and haven't broken like other plastic tags I've had in the past. The colors also don't smear or run like some plastic tags I've had before.

Mine have two tags on their collars. One is their rabies tag, which can also trace the dog back to its vet. The other is their ID tag. The front has:

    Name
"If I'm alone, I'm lost. Scan for *insert brand* microchip."
    Home phone

    Back has:
    Our cell numbers
My parents' house phone (they live nearby)
    The vet's phone number
    and "Strictly Indoors"

When I ordered Tar's tag yesterday, I also included "Does not hunt" on the back of his tag. Labs are so popular here because of duck hunting, and I'd hate for someone to find him and not return him because they think he might hunt. I did the same with Brown when we first adopted him.

Xebby - you are looking for "Shrinky-Dinks" types of plastic.  If you have any good rubberstamping store near you (possibly scrapbooking too) they might have this.  Use a sharpie marker, and it will turn out great.  Make sure that you use a hole punch BEFORE you shrinkt it.

When you would take it out of the oven, have something flat handy (like a not-plastic plate) to flatten the plastic if it needs it.

Slightly off topic - I did a shrinky-dink tag for my daughter when she was in her early grade school years, and then clipped it on her backpack.  I did not put her name on it, but had my name, work number, her bus number, her daycare name phone number etc.  I felt better knowing that if somehow she got on the wrong bus, anyone would be able to help her get in contact with me.

I LOVE The Boomerang tags!  Baileys got two of them on her thing and both sides are filled.  One is pink ad one is white and they both have black lettering which I love because its realy eay to read.

Side one:  Her name, my name, my cell, the vet#
Side Two:   DH cell, Home# address
Side One tag 2:Home again pet service, the 1800# and her microchip ID#
Side two tag 2:  REWARD, microchipped, need daily meds, please return, REWARD

[:)]  The thing I really like is that the letters and numbers are all big and its very easy to read.
