Cats on the counter

Hmmm....I'm getting this for general concensus...

None of us allow the cats to get up on the counters...but they all do it sometimes (even if we never actually catch them doing so). [sm=biggrin.gif]

    How....CATT-ISH!

Trixie is allowed on the table, because that's where her food and water bowls are.  She has never tried getting on the counter, so I'm lucky there.

Roxie, however, attempts to steal stuff from the counters and table.  She thinks she's quite sneaky ... [&:]

Over the years we've been really lucky with our cats NOT getting on the counters or table.  However, the younger little gal that I rescued in Savannah likes to get on the china cabinet now that I keep that in the downstairs kitchen where the cats mostly hang out.

Oh....and tinfoil on the counter??  Doesn't do a thing.  We had ONE house that had the absolute BEST kitchen with counters to die for....the cats DID like those.

i don't have a cat, but before i moved out of my parents our cat never even attempted the counter, he was quite obese, i doubt he would've made it. one of my friends had a cat that would get up on the counter while they were gone, and lick the stick of butter, and then they would use it! [:'(]

if we did have a cat it would not be allowed on the counters, cat feces can carry a bacteria which causes toxoplasmosis, a potentially fatal disease pregnant women are very susceptible to, it can cause major problems in the fetus, even death. while not all cats carry it and im sure you could get it from anywhere they walked i would just feel uncomfortable with them walking around on a food surface.

ETA: they won't let me volunteer at the shelter while i'm pregnant, for many reasons of course, but the risk of contracting toxoplasmosis is one of the main ones.

No cats on the counter in my house.  I had a cat (born feral) that would climb on the counters, the top of the fridge, cabinet tops and would play in the sink.  There's nothing that would dissuade this cat:  If he was in the sink, I could turn the water on him full blast and he'd just look up as if to say "I'm not leaving until I'm finished."  He would also wake me up at odd hours of the night by playing a game; the "let's play with the light switch and turn the hall lights on and off game."  I forget to mention that his vertical leap was around 5 feet straight up, no running.

But the cat I have now...she's lazy and more dog like...and very, very needy but won't jump up on anything in the kitchen except the raised dog feeders.

we were living in a first floor apartment several years ago and thought one of our cats had dashed out the door. we had looked everwhere for her (spent a couple of hours tearing the apartment apart), and finally we saw her sleeping on top of the cabinets. it took us a while to figure out how she got up there.

I had to laugh when I read this...so typical I can picture it!! [:D]

My crew (3) can hear a can opener start up and they come from across the house and downstairs in 1.5 seconds to hop on the kitchen counter just in case it might be something for them.  When we moved into this new house a year ago we decided to try spraying them with water to keep them off the counter.  WHAT A LAUGH.  they just glare at you as if to say "Have you lost your mind?  I belong on this counter whenever I want to get up here.  A little water is not going to make a hill of beans different you stupid human.  Now go get my cat food"

My cat is not allowed on the counter or tables, but we don't mind if he sits on bookcases or places that will never have food or drink on them.  Of course the fact that we don't want him on the counters doesn't mean he doesn't go up there anyway.  Our solution is to put aluminum foil over whatever spots we don't want him, since he HATES walking on foil.  It keeps him off, but then we have aluminum foil covering our tables so I'm not sure it's the best solution.

My cat is allowed on everything, but she hasn't jumped up on the counters lately.  She has learned  that begging can get her the same thing with out having to jump [:D]

Our big old persian was never interested in being on the counters or table, so it was never really an issue. I guess he figured it just was not a nice place to sleep, and that's all he was interested in doing. [:D]

Lol title of this thread reminded me of the Cat's in the Cradle song...

"Well the cat's on the counter licking silver spoons..."
"Little tabby jumping down, humans be home soon..."

"When they comin home, cat?...I don't know when..but I'll be on the floor by theeeennn"...

"Ya know they'll think I'm good right thennnn"

[sm=rotfl.gif][sm=rotfl.gif][sm=rotfl.gif][sm=rotfl.gif]  DYING HERE!! Nicely done GINA!!

We tried for the first 5 years to keep the cats off and then the last 5 years have given up!!!

Honestly, I don't sweat it like I use to( more concerned about the puked up hairballs all over the carpet and rugs [:'(])  BUT they can't be on when we cook (and I always disinfect the counters before cooking) and they are not allowed on the dining room table when we are eating (I disinfect this too).

    Cats are so exhausting [&o]

Tell me about it. While I'm trying to type, Peaches is insisting that she be on my lap, on the keyboard, in front of  the screen,etc...

I have three cats, and don't allow it but damn if I can stop them.  I have to chase them on occassion.  One day I walked into my dinning room and found my one mainecoon sprawled out on the table sleeping in the sunshine.  He was so comfortable I pretended not to see it and let him stay there.[;)]
