Pics of my hedgehog and guinea pig!

I thought you guys might like to see pics of my guinea pig, Smores and my new hedgehog, Twinkie.

    Here's Smores

My favorite pic of Smores- he's grooming. :)

This one shows his markings really well- he's a cinnacot pinto.

    Thank you! [:)]

You are very welcome.  I have a question though.  Is the hedgehog prickily and is he easy to tend?  Just curious.  How friendly is he?

OMG! Twinkie is to die for. I want one. Are they prickly?

Awww... I just love hedghogs.  I had one named Shyer, named him that because he was a shy little guy when I first got him and would not come out of his ball at first.  Mine was a much darker than yours and had grey fur.  He just loved chasing crickets around in his home and also liked frozen peas as a treat.

Your two little ones are just adorable.  I just want to scoop them up and hold them.  Let the hedghog lick my hand, thats why mine did when he met strangers.

    How cute!

I had no idea you could keep hedgehogs as pets. Are they friendly? Do you litterbox train them? Very interesting! And I love the names. [:D]

ILUVJRS and Tiffy- When they lay their quills flat, you can pet them from head to tail and not get prickled. But when they get huffy they spike up their quills in all different directions and jump at whatever is scaring them. So, yeah if you pick the up with your bare hands or pet them when they're like that it does hurt.

Hedgehogs for the most part are very solitary creatures so most of them are basically indifferent to humans. They can get used to you and your scent though. Some of them actually like to be held and some of them are complete hermits that don't want to be handled. Twinkie is somewhere in between the two extremes.

As far as caring for them. Most people keep them in large clear sterilite bins without the lid. They need solid flooring because their little paws could get caught in wire cages. They also need a large wheel with a solid surface. I have a silent spinner wheel for Twinkie. They're insectivores and the best diet for them at this point is a mix of several different dry cat foods and occasional mealworms and other treats like chicken, some fruits and veggies, etc.

Xebby- I didn't know you had a hedgehog. That's awesome! I used to have one before that was also darker, he was chocolate and named Truffles. He was extremely shy also. He almost never came unrolled when I had him out. He would stay in a ball and huff and puff. He sounded like a car engine. Having Twinkie is such a different experience because he walks around and stuff when I have him out of his cage.

Edited because I was typing when you posted Loki's mom. Some hedgehogs can be litter trained, but most of them just go while they're running on their wheel. It's kind of icky, I have to wash and bleach his wheel every day. I forgot to mention that hedgehogs are nocturnal, so I usually don't see him up and about.

Also forgot to mention that hedgehogs are illegal in some states. I know for sure that they're illegal in California because when I lived there I really wanted one, but couldn't have one.

I would love to own another hedgehog but they are the only animal I have found myself allergic to.  I would feed mine cat food mostly and give him treats all the time, like crickets, mill worms, veggies and also enjoyed the occasional cooked egg.  I had a huge tank I kept him in and changed the bedding about once a week. They are nocturnal so at night I could hear him running around and making noises.  During the day he mostly hid in his box or log.

I didn't mind the pricks on his back and after a while I got adjusted to holding him.  He would lick me then lick his back with his long tong.  I was told they put the sent on their back so they can remember it, I don't know if that#%92s true but was funny to watch him lick his back.  He never bite me and once he got adjusted to me he would come out of his ball.  I remember the hissing puffy sound he would make and it was almost too funny.  Oh, I miss that little guy.  Passed on about 3 years ago.

Anyway enough about my little Shyer, Luventzus, you have one good looking hedggie and you sound very prepaired to own one.

He sounds like he was a fun little guy. [:)] Hedgies are such unique, cute, and interesting little creatures. My Truffles had to be put to sleep about a year ago. He never bit me either. He would stay rolled up huffing and puffing when he felt threatened. Twinkie on the other hand stays unrolled and bites! At first it was the lick, lick, nibble that hedgies do when you have something tasty on your hand. But when I trimmed his nails he actually bit my thumb. It really surprised me! For about 3 days after that, everytime I took him out to hold him he'd bite whatever was closest and when hedgies bite for real they latch on. Luckily I was holding him with a blanket (don't want my hands near him now that I know  he bites). He latched onto the blanket for at least a minute. Then he'd let go for a few minutes and latch on again- even shaking the blanket. [:o]

Anyway, they say to keep handling them when they act like that so they don't get rewarded by going back to their cage when they bite. Anyhoo, he's still a fun little guy, hopefully he'll grow out of the biting.

Meant to add I'm sorry to hear that you're allergic to hedgies. That's a real shame!

Your other pets are neat, Tamara!  I especially think the hedgehog is cool, because it's a unique pet (to me).  Not sure I could deal with bleaching the wheel each day.  LOL!

Thanks Kenny! Yeah the cleaning is the worst part, but they're still worth it to me. [:)]

Is it a pygmy hedgehog?  (from africa or somewhere?)  I had the care of two for about a week a few years ago and they were brilliant!  But they are quite hard to get hold of here, not common pets at all.  Twinkie is adorable!  Smores is cute too, I used to have 2 cavies called Sharky and George and they were soooo cute.  I shall try to post a piccie.... if I can find one.....
