    Need help with buster cube

I have a buster cube and have had it for quite a while.  A while back there was an accident in the crate and the cube was deemed unusable for a while.  I finally got around to putting it in the dishwasher (per manufacturer's instructions) this morning.  I unload the dishwasher when I got home and the cube smells really, really bad.  So I rinsed it out in the sink and it still smells awful.  Obviously, I can't use it like this.  I can't figure out how to scub it.  I've tried sloshing some pamolive in there, but it still smells.  It looks like the bottom of it isn't smooth, but it's hard to tell.  Should I try a dilute bleach solution?  (I've done this in the past, but now I'm wondering if it really cleaned it or not.  I also wonder if it weakened the plastic.)  Does that really clean it enough to use it again?  Is there a similiar product that is easier to clean?  I really like the product for my malinois while she's crated when I'm gone, but I need to be able to really clean it if she's going to be able to use it.

it sounds like there is somthing in it that has become wet, rotted and hardened.  if that's the case, washing it over and over will not do the trick, you'd have to really scrub out the inside.  i don't think mine comes apart, i've never tried, but i'm going to assume that you tried to take it apart and it probably didn't come apart.  to be safe,  i would buy a new one.  if your dog really loves it, it's worth it to just get another one instead of exposing some bacteria to the dog.

that's my thinking, but the malinois has a very delicate stomach, so has, er, problems on a regular basis.  so I'm not really sure I want to buy another one if this is going to be a re-occuring problem.  And at 15 bucks a pop, I can't really afford to buy bunches of them.

What if you tried putting a baby bottle brush in it to scrub it?  Maybe if you bent the brush a little it can get the bottom a bit better.

For every question there is a website:

How do I clean the cube?
The Buster Cube is easy to clean if necessary. It is for example safe to put it in the dish washer. It goes without saying that it has to be difficult to remove the inner tube or the dog would much too easily be able to get it out and bite it to pieces. Therefore we recommend that you do not remove it unless it is absolutely necessary.

Looks like you can take the inner tube out and take it apart, but I can't understand because this website is not in english.  Maybe it's just showing what it looks like on the inside.

First off, since it is all plastic, soak it in hot soap water repeatedly (like two days with water changes 3 or 4 times).  When the water seems absolutely clean and nothing can be dislodges by the water working its magic, get enough baking soda to cover it completely.  Fill the buster cube, use a bucket with an inch (baking soda) or so at the bottom, put in the buster cube.  Cover buster cube with baking soda about an inch above the highest point of the buster cube.  Let the baking soda work for 48 hours.  If it can get clean and deodorized, baking soda is the most likely to do it, and it is not toxic.

BTW  my friend who does direct care malinois rescue, uses something thing called treat sticks.  They are similar to buster cubes.  She has had some high drive service dogs retire with her (bomb dogs from civilian contractors in Afganistan and Iraq etc.  The treat sticks are holding up under their use.  Did a quick search and could not find a link.  Let me know if you would like details and I will contact my friend.

thanks guys.  I've taken the inner cylinder out, but that's as far as it goes.  I'll try the baking soda and see if I can get a bottle brush.  And I'd love to know about the treat sticks if it's not a bother.
