    is this healthy?

i know i should've posted this in the nutrition forum, but, well i guess i have no excuse. my mom sent me a recipe for dog jerky, i was wondering if any of the ingrediants are no-no's. if i make it i would omit the garlic even though it is supposed to be ok, but other than that does it look alright? isnt terriyaki super-salty? and do dogs actually like ginger? berserker thinks my homemade egg rolls are disgusting, i figure its the chinese veggies or the ginger...

            Doggie Turkey Jerky

Use a low-sodium teriyaki sauce, especially for older dogs.

1 pound ground turkey, or substitute ground chicken or beef

    3 teaspoons teriyaki sauce

    1 to 2 cloves garlic

    1/2 teaspoon ginger

Preheat the oven to the lowest setting, 150 to 170 degrees.

Mix all ingredients and spread thinly onto a cookie sheet.

Place in the oven and bake for two hours.

During baking, keep the oven door propped open. After two hours, remove the jerky from

the oven and blot any grease with paper towels.

Slice the jerky into one- to two-inch strips. Turn the slices over and return to the oven and

    bake two more hours.

Allow them to cool, then store in the freezer.

I'm not that great about telling what's what in nutrition but I have to say I would eat that if it wasn't labeled as a dog treat.

I would use a dehydrator instead of the oven, should work the same just take a little longer but you would not have to worry about the oven door being propped open.  I use to make jerky all the time in the dehydrator and it was so good.

It should be fine. My dogs LIKE ginger, but that doesn't mean much. My dogs like everything.

Why bother seasoning it at all?  Why not just dehydrate the raw meat as is?

I agree.  Meat is meat to a dog!  I don't see a problem with the garlic or ginger in small amounts, but the teriyaki is very high in sodium.  I would just leave all seasonings out though.

I might leave the teriaki out, too.  But, ginger is good for dogs that get carsick...

I put the ginger and teriyaki on, but only because 1, I have a dad who will eat anything jerky-ish that isn't specifically LABELED as dog treats, and 2, it's a LOT more palatable when you're hiding bait in your mouth in the conformation ring. :P

My Gracey luffs Ginger.  One of her favorite training treats is gingersnap cookies.

Sounds good.  I night even try this.  I make something similar with tuna and egg.  I, too, would leave the teriyaki out.
